The Bosque de Orgi gives Lizaso a special connection with nature: this ancient oak forest stretches between Lizaso and Gerendiain. Covering 80 hectares, it is a rare surviving example of Navarre’s damp oak forests and is of great ecological importance. It is designated as an Área Natural Recreativa, with the aim of making forest conservation compatible with public access.
Forest trails and longer routes
For a short walk through the forest, there is El Laberinto: this easy, winding route is 300 metres long and ends at the Árbol caído. The large oak was once toppled by the wind and is now covered by other plants. At 1,400 metres, El Camino is longer and connects with La Senda in the Bosque de Orgi. This trail is 700 metres long and runs between Gerendiain and Lizaso. Along the way, it passes a salt pond believed to be a remnant of the sea that covered this area 180 or 200 million years ago.
Along El Camino and La Senda, there are areas with wooden benches, boardwalks and a small birdwatching shelter. The trails in the Bosque de Orgi are easy, flat and accessible; they are also suitable for blind people and people using wheelchairs. Check the current condition of the trails before your visit.
For those planning a longer route, there are options of different lengths and itineraries: the 8.5-kilometre Sendero de Orgi loop passes through Lizaso, Gorrontz-Olano and Guelbenzu. The 9.86-kilometre Vuelta a Ultzama starts in Lizaso but does not pass through the entire Valle de Ultzama. The Robledal de Orgi trail starts in the Área Natural Recreativa de Orgi, follows a rural track to Lizaso, then passes the golf course before climbing to Gorrontz and Olano. As the route may change, check it before setting out.
Rural life, Cuajada and activities
The Granja Escuela Ultzama combines insights into rural life with guided animal visits and workshops on making Cuajada by hand. This educational activity centre welcomes families, schools and people interested in rural life. A guided visit to more than 90 animals lasts 60 minutes; the animals include cows, donkeys, a mare, ponies and miniature ponies, five breeds of sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits and birds. The programme also includes a 30-minute workshop on making traditional Cuajada, followed by a tasting. Confirm availability before your visit.
The Granja also offers an organic garden and information about sustainable agriculture. In Lizaso, Mikaela offers guided visits and workshops for families and schools on agroecology and sustainable food production. For horseback or pony rides, Hípica Doble A is another option in Lizaso.
Golf and local history
The Lizaso Golf Club describes an introductory package featuring five supervised practice sessions on the driving range and rounds on a full-size golf course. A follow-up package includes eight supervised practice sessions and rounds on the course as well. As the programme formats may change, check what is on offer before making plans. Golf is also available at the Lizaso Pitch & Putt golf centre. FootGolf combines the precision of golf with a passion for football and is offered in a natural setting in the Valle de Ultzama.
An architectural landmark also forms part of the village: the stone Church of Saints Simon and Jude in Lizaso is a Baroque building dating from the 17th century. Forest trails, rural themes, golf and a historic building therefore offer different options to focus on when planning a trip.
