For travel planning, Genevilla can be divided into three distinct highlights: the architectural and artistic history of the parish church of San Esteban, the paths through Sierra Chiquita and a stage of the Ignatian Way. The church combines medieval architectural features with a 16th-century renovation; the Sierra route moves from orchards to woodland. This lets you decide whether culture, a scenic route or a longer hiking stage should shape your stay.

San Esteban: Architectural History and Art

The parish church of San Esteban was built around 1200 in a proto-Gothic style and extensively renovated in the mid-16th century. Its medieval pointed-arch portal has six archivolts, alternating between plain and decorated forms. Archivolts are the arch rings of a portal; their alternating designs are among the distinctive details of the entrance.

The medieval layout has also been preserved: a broad nave divided into two bays and a deep polygonal choir. “Divided into two bays” describes the nave’s two-part layout, while “polygonal” refers to the choir’s multi-sided shape. The terms describe different parts of the spatial design.

The main altarpiece dates from the second third of the 16th century and is designed in the expressionist style. Together with the extensive renovation in the mid-century, it offers an art-historical perspective on the same period, while the layout and portal illustrate the church’s medieval architectural history.

Sierra Chiquita: Woodland and Spring

The route through Sierra Chiquita first crosses orchards and then dense woodland of holm oaks, oaks, maples and beech trees. Genevilla’s natural vegetation includes 390 hectares of holm-oak woodland and 278 hectares of beech woodland.

A marked hiking trail starts in Genevilla and climbs to Puerto de Aguilar. This is distinct from the possible climb from the mountain pass of Sierra Chiquita to the highest point of the Sierra, which offers impressive views. A short detour leads to the La Celagua spring, where there is a picnic area; check the condition of the facilities before visiting.

Ignatian Way: Alda–Genevilla Stage

The Alda–Genevilla stage of the Ignatian Way is 23.3 kilometres long and gains 740 metres in elevation. In the Genevilla area, a section of the route begins on a farm track behind the houses near the town hall. Check the waymarking at the starting point on site. The short detour to the spring and the 23.3-kilometre stage represent very different levels of hiking effort.

Tradition and Local Cuisine

A procession traditionally held in Genevilla on Easter Monday included humorous accounts of events and mishaps involving local residents; afterwards, a straw Judas was burned in the village square. If you would like to plan your trip around this tradition, check the date and visiting arrangements in advance.

White beans are considered a typical dish in Genevilla and are traditionally prepared by local residents. If you would like to try them during your stay, ask locally whether they are available.
