A 500-metre-long path through a wetland, a Roman villa with traces of wine production and a certified Starlight network reveal different sides of Falces. As you plan your stay, you can choose from nature trails, historic sites and visits to agricultural businesses.
Nature and trails: different highlights
At Humedal de Soto Abajo, there is adapted visitor parking, a picnic area and an information point. From there, two paths lead through the wetland. The shorter path is 500 metres long and adapted for people with reduced mobility and people with visual impairments. Check locally that the facilities are accessible before you arrive.
The night sky is another part of the area’s natural appeal: Falces is part of the Red de Parajes Starlight de la Ribera de Navarra. The Fundación Starlight certifies this network of places with exceptionally high sky quality and low light pollution, making them suitable for observing the night sky.
For a longer route, the Ruta de las Cigüeñas offers specific details: it is 6.26 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 192 metres. You can follow the route on foot or by bike. It passes the Villa Romana de San Esteban, a viewpoint and the route of the Encierro del Pilón. The Ruta del Arquillo, by contrast, is a signposted circular route. It follows agricultural tracks and paths, is intended for hiking or mountain biking, and runs through the Reserva Natural de los Sotos del Arquillo y Barbaraces. Signage and trail conditions can change; check them before setting out.
Another contrast is the Ruta PilĂłn Trail familiar: it includes an easy, family-friendly section with a climb to the Salvador shelter. This is followed by a path with slides and zigzag sections. These details refer to the section described, not to all the trails in Falces.
Roman remains and historic sites
The Villa Romana San Esteban dates mostly from the 4th century. It was used to produce and store wine; surviving features include a pressing platform, a wine-press basin, a fumarium and storage rooms. The site can be reached on foot or by car and has a car park. Visits are available as part of a guided tour, with advance booking. Check booking arrangements and visit details in advance.
Puppets and the town’s history are the focus of the Casa Museo. The museum houses Navarre’s first permanent puppet exhibition, with 15 particularly noteworthy works by Marionetas Pis-Pis. It also recreates rooms in a wealthy home, displays objects from other buildings and preserves an early 20th-century carpentry workshop. It also documents historic buildings in Falces that no longer exist.
The BasĂlica del Salvador del Mundo stands on a rocky rise, dates back to the Middle Ages and houses a Mannerist altarpiece from the first half of the 17th century. It is also a viewpoint overlooking Falces and the comarca. The Castillo de los Moros offers a different glimpse into history: its ruins belong to the Falahsan fortress between the PilĂłn and Busierra gorges, which once guarded the border town of Falces.
Agriculture and local visits
A visit to Jesús Aranda’s organically and biodynamically farmed olive grove combines a guided tour of a sustainable agricultural environment with an olive oil tasting. The experience is available year-round by advance booking. At the Loregar farm, the focus is on organic tomato and almond farming, including greenhouse and open-field tomato-growing techniques. The farm’s brand is “Tomate Rosa de Falces Maia”. Advance booking is required; a tasting is planned during the tomato production season, from May to November.
At HĂpica ZahorĂ, the visitor experience includes an exhibition of carriages and old agricultural tools, as well as an introduction to fighting bull breeding. The farm has more than 300 animals, including horses, oxen, donkeys, ponies, sheep, goats, geese and lambs. Visit arrangements can change, so check them in advance. As part of its annual programme, garlic producer Augusto Olite gives a tour of his warehouse, explains the production and history of garlic, and then offers a garlic-braiding workshop. Check dates and availability locally.
