In Aibar’s historic centre, streets and houses wind up the hill in semicircular patterns towards a former complex crowned by a defensive wall. The Iglesia de San Pedro adds a building to the townscape whose origins date back to 1146. Alongside the town’s history, nature watching, renewable energy and outdoor activities are other options to consider during a stay.

Church, town centre and everyday culture

The Iglesia de San Pedro combines Romanesque and Gothic elements. Originally, it was a three-aisled building with three semicircular apses; the central nave was wider than the side aisles. The Parroquia de San Pedro is considered a significant example of Navarrese Romanesque architecture and one of Navarre’s oldest Romanesque churches with monumental sculpture. Its building history can be read not only in its stylistic features but also in its original layout.

At the highest point of Aibar hill, the Portal de la Hueca is another link to the town’s early history: the first settlement there was protected by a defensive castle, which has since disappeared. The Casa-museo de los Oficios y la Memoria de Aibar is dedicated to the region’s traditional culture, former ways of life and the town’s intangible heritage. Wine, oil and grain provide the themes through which these aspects are presented. Guided visits with tastings are available by prior arrangement; check the current visiting arrangements in advance.

Outdoor activities

About 3 km from Aibar, Artamendia Aventura is an adventure park set beneath an old oak forest. Activities include treetop attractions, swings, nets, zip lines and suspension bridges. Two tree-top courses share the same area and have different difficulty levels. The Circuito de IniciaciĂłn is designed for children aged 3 and over. As seasonal operations may change, check the current options before your visit.

A circular route associated with the Artamendia area is about 5 km long and has no significant elevation gain; trail conditions may change. The route offers a different focus from the courses: its length and elevation profile are described, while the courses differ in difficulty.

Wetland and renewable energy

The Balsa de La Mueda is a 12-hectare natural wetland. Migratory birds found there include bitterns, storks and cranes; sightings vary depending on the season and water conditions. The birdwatching observatory at the Balsa is a simple wooden hut with viewing slots, from which visitors can watch birds. Water levels and sightings can also vary seasonally.

The Aula de Energías Renovables has two large exhibition areas and an audiovisual room. Information panels, models of different types of renewable energy and videos explore the subject. Visits to renewable energy facilities in the comarca are organised from the Aula. There are also hands-on activities with natural fuels under the motto “Hazlo tú mism@”. Prior arrangements may be required for these activities.

When planning your visit, you can choose different areas of focus: the building history and town layout offer an insight into Aibar’s past, while the wetland and observatory draw attention to birds and changing water conditions. Artamendia adds courses and a circular route to the options; the Aula focuses specifically on renewable energy. A prior arrangement is required for visits with tastings at the Casa-museo. This lets you choose the themes that suit your stay without having to combine them into a set itinerary.
