In Cabanillas, historic churches and the Trujal de la Casa de Belver sit alongside opportunities for walks, cycling and stargazing. The town also offers cuisine featuring seasonal vegetables and a calendar of festivals with its own traditions. When planning your stay, you can therefore start by deciding whether cultural heritage, outdoor activities or local customs will be your main focus.

Churches and Historic Sites

The Church of San Juan de Jerusalén combines a Romanesque apse with slender columns and semicircular windows with a single-nave layout. Its domed façade was returned to its original position after a complete restoration. The church is also historically associated with the Hospitaller monks, who cared for pilgrims there.

Another cultural highlight is the Trujal de la Casa de Belver. It was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2006 and is considered the only trujal de sangre of its kind in Navarre. It is also described as the “jewel of Navarre’s pre-industrial heritage.” Those interested in historic sites will find a distinct focus here alongside the church architecture.

The parish church of Our Lady of the Assumption is also part of the town’s cultural identity. It has a Baroque appearance and preserves sacred furnishings from different periods. These include altarpieces and devotional figures created as part of successive commissions between the 16th and 18th centuries.

The construction of the irrigation channel, then known as the Acequia del Ebro, is also part of the local history. The municipalities of Cabanillas and Fustiñana, together with the Hospitaller Order, built their first three leguas. The municipal program for 2026 included free, seasonal guided tours of the Romanesque Church of San Juan de Jerusalén and the Trujal de la Casa de Belver.

Walking, Cycling and Stargazing

The section of the Corredor Verde del Ebro near Cabanillas can be explored on foot or by bike. Cycling enthusiasts can also explore the Bardenas Reales by bike from Cabanillas. The Club BTT Cabanillas organizes several popular cycling events each year; the dates vary for each event.

The Mirador Starlight de Cabanillas offers a different focus. It is located beside the canal at the entrance to the municipality and is suitable for stargazing thanks to the quality and darkness of the night sky. Cabanillas is also part of the Corredor Verde del Ebro Starlight network. Its offerings include astronomical signage, interpretive features, and recreational and educational activities at the viewpoints.

These experiences offer different highlights: the Corredor section combines walking or cycling, while the Mirador focuses on views of the night sky. Cycling events provide another reason to visit. If you are planning around one of these events, check your travel dates against the relevant event dates.

Cuisine, Festivals and When to Visit

Cabanillas’ traditional cuisine is based on seasonal vegetables, including artichokes, asparagus and borage. The Día de la Alcachofa y el Espárrago puts artichokes and asparagus in the spotlight: the event held on 25 April 2026 included demonstrations on how to peel and prepare both vegetables. The event date also makes the seasonal connection relevant when choosing when to travel.

The annual Fiestas de San Roque take place from 15 to 21 August. The program includes orchestras, bull-related events, communal meals and various performances. Another recurring tradition is the distinctive “captura del Judas,” which features real people instead of a customary puppet.

If you are planning around events, check their dates for your travel period. You should also check accommodation availability for your specific travel dates.
