In Cascante, Roman heritage, significant church art and activities at Laguna de Lor come together to help you plan your trip. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether cultural sites, wine-growing or trails and nature will shape your stay. The town’s history dates back to Roman times; museums, churches and a range of routes offer further perspectives on the town and its surroundings.

Culture, churches and Roman history

In Parque del Romero, next to the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Romero, the Museo Etnográfico tells the story of Cascante and its traditional trades. Exhibits include farming tools, old organs and coins. The Museo de Santa Vicenta is dedicated to the life of Vicenta María López y Vicuña. It is housed in her four-storey birthplace and also displays personal belongings.

Built between 1684 and 1693, the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Romero is an example of Baroque architecture. A brick colonnade with 39 semicircular arches connects the church to Cascante. Inside, the basilica preserves a Gothic chapel dedicated to Saint Mark. Its furnishings include an original Gothic altarpiece from the first half of the 16th century, commissioned from the painter Pedro Díaz de Oviedo.

The Iglesia de la AsunciĂłn also offers its own point of interest for art history: it was built between 1527 and 1558 and houses a collection of paintings, including the Tabla de la AsunciĂłn from the late 16th century. The Iglesia de la Victoria is in the town centre. It was formerly a monastery belonging to the MĂnimos; some parts of the former monastery have been preserved.

In Roman times, Cascante was known as Cascantum and was the eleventh stop on the route between Tarragona and Astorga. This heritage is also at the heart of Semana Romana de Cascante, which usually takes place in June. The programme includes workshops, conferences, an exhibition, theatre and other activities. Each year, a community theatre project brings dozens of residents together to perform a play inspired by Roman times; the programme may vary from year to year. Check the dates for your trip in advance.

Another tradition takes place on the third weekend in May, when people visit the La Cruceta monument on a small hill. Together with the priest and local authorities, they bless the fields and the harvest.

Lagoon, countryside and trails

Laguna de Lor lies between Cascante and Ablitas and is used for fishing, walking and birdwatching. A raised path about three kilometres long runs around the lagoon. Vineyards and olive groves shape the landscape of La Huerta de Cascante, alongside field margins, reed beds, irrigation channels and paths. This offers a choice of different nature and landscape experiences without combining them into a single tour.

The stated route distances are useful for comparison when planning routes, although they do not by themselves determine walking or driving times. The Cascante–Humedales municipal cycling route is 35.55 kilometres long. Another route runs from Estación de Cascante via Barillas, Olivos de la plana and Laguna de Lor, and back to Estación de Cascante; it is 9.2 kilometres long. The route details may be revised, so it is advisable to check the latest route description before planning.

The Vía Verde del Tarazonica is suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. On the Murchante–Cascante section, the route climbs towards Cascante. There is a rest area at the former Cascante railway station. The former station is also a useful reference point for anyone exploring this section of the Vía Verde.

Wine-growing as another theme

The experience at Bodegas MalĂłn de Echaide in Cascante includes a guided route through the vineyards, with information about local wine-growing culture. It also includes access to the inside of the winery and a tasting of three wines. As availability may change, check whether the experience is offered on your chosen date before making specific plans.
