Discover Betelu through its distinctive holm oak landscape, trails along the Araxes, and local architectural and festival traditions. When looking for accommodation in Betelu, your preferred focus may help you decide: Ruta 22 is a circular trail through the Zigadia-Beroate natural area, while the Senda de Goikola follows the river to the ruins of a former copper foundry.

Holm Oak Forest and the Araxes Landscape

The holm oak forests of Zigadia-Beroate are designated as natural area EN-27. They lie upstream of the village of Betelu on both banks of the Araxes. Within the municipality of Betelu, the area covers 41.3 hectares.

Zigadia-Beroate is a rare ecosystem of Mediterranean origin, isolated in an Atlantic environment. In Navarre, the holm oak ecosystem forms a biological corridor between the Mediterranean and Eurosiberian biogeographical regions. Thus, it is not only the individual trees but also the area’s distinctive ecological classification that shapes its character.

Another natural feature of interest is Betelu’s thermal springs. Their hydrothermal system is formed by groundwater circulating deep underground, contact with the saline formations of the Keuper facies, and the rapid, geologically driven ascent of the water.

Circular Trail, Riverside Path and Viewpoint

The Ruta 22 Encinar de Betelu starts in Betelu and is a 4 km circular hiking trail. It passes through the Zigadia-Beroate natural area and by the remains of former mining facilities. The route has an elevation difference of 320 m; steep sections require suitable footwear. The best view along the route is from Alto de Arritxo.

The Senda de Goikola is another trail option: this easy path runs along the Araxes and is described as an approximately 700 m one-way route. It is accessible to wheelchairs, carts and strollers; check the accessibility of the facilities on site. Compared with the 4 km circular trail, the Goikola path is shorter and follows the river rather than forming a loop through the natural area.

The entrance to the Senda de Goikola is at the Betelu water-bottling plant, on the site of the former spa. Local access rules may affect entry; check before your visit. The path leads to the ruins of the FerrerĂa de Goikola, a former copper foundry. The Senda is also known as the Camino Real because it was used by guests of the former spa, including King Alfonso XII.

Another viewpoint, the Mirador de las Malloas, is about a 20-minute walk from Betelu. From there, you can see the steep Malloas escarpment and the villages and hamlets of the Araitz Valley. Alongside the two trails, this offers a viewpoint and vistas of the valley and rock face.

Buildings and Traditions Passed Down Through the Generations

The Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol is a single-nave stone church with a late Gothic portal. The Palacio de Azconegui is listed as a cabo de armería in the kingdom’s official register; a 1513 list of military quarters also refers to it as such. Both buildings lend the village a sense of history.

The Karrika dantza de Betelu is part of the carnival tradition: the dance has its own melody and is performed in procession through the streets. The Txistularis tradition combines music and folk dance in a different way. The musicians play the txistu with one hand and a small drum with the other; at major festivals, they perform pieces for folk dances. The traditions passed down through the generations thus differ both in their occasion and in their musical form.
