On the northeastern slope of the Sierra de Urbasa, above the Irubide road junction, stands the Basaluze Tower, an optical telegraph tower. It was part of the Madrid–Irún line, with 56 towers built between 1844 and 1846. This technological history offers a distinctive way to explore Alsasua: historic architecture, recurring festivals and walking and hiking opportunities also shape travel plans. You can first decide whether to focus your stay more on culture and festival dates or on outings in the surrounding area.

Architecture and historic sites

The Casa Municipal in Altsasu was inaugurated in 1760 and designed by the architect José Lizardi. The Church of the Assumption offers a different architectural focus: it is a 16th-century Renaissance church with three naves and a polygonal apse. Its furnishings include a 17th-century Romanist altarpiece with scenes from the Passion, depictions of saints and the Birth of Mary, as well as a polychrome wooden figure of the dead Christ from the 15th century.

The chapels also reflect different connections to the area. San Pedro stands on the border between Alsasua and Urdiain. San Juan Bautista lies west of Altsasu town centre, on a hill above the Alzania River. It is visited on the evening of 23 June and the morning of 24 June. The locations of the two chapels offer another point of reference as you explore the buildings and their surroundings.

The Basaluze Tower adds an example of early optical communication to these historic sites. Its place on the Madrid–Irún line connects it to a network built within the defined period of 1844 to 1846. Together with the Casa Municipal, inaugurated in 1760, and the buildings of the Church of the Assumption, it offers an overview of different periods, without requiring you to combine the individual sights into a fixed route.

Festivals and recurring traditions

Some dates give the annual calendar a distinctive structure. During the Cencerrada of Altsasu, children walk through the town with cowbells, announcing the arrival of the Three Kings. On 3 May, the daily bell ringing for the Day of the Holy Cross begins at 12 noon and continues until 14 September. The celebrations in the old town include a display of traditional crafts and activities for children. The programme may vary.

The patronal festival for the Exaltation of the Holy Cross takes place on 14 September and honours the Santo Cristo de Otadia. The festival includes a cycling race and pelota games; individual programme items may also vary. The rural carnival of Altsasu/Alsasua takes place on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Its main figures are the Momotxorros. The Piñata Carnival follows on the Saturday after Ash Wednesday. Since Ash Wednesday shifts on the calendar, the specific dates also change from year to year.

The Feria de Alsasua lasts three days and features stalls run by artisans and local producers. The Sunday programme includes an equestrian competition. The exact dates, participating exhibitors and programme may change from year to year. If a festival is the reason for your trip, check the dates and programme for the relevant year.

Walks and cultural activities

Near Altsasu are the Campas de San Pedro, traditionally used by residents of the region and visitors for relaxation and walks. The area around the Urdalur Reservoir is also suitable for hiking. From Altsasu/Alsasua, you can reach the Sierra de Urbasa via OlazagutĂa; check local conditions in advance for any specific outing. These options differ from traditions with fixed dates: they offer a focus on the landscape, while festivals tie your travel dates more closely to particular days.

For cultural activities, the municipal cultural service offers theatre, music, cinema and exhibitions. The programme changes over time, so if a particular event is important to your trip, check the current dates.
