Valdemorillo combines striking architectural history with several hiking options and a distinctive local cultural heritage. The Late Gothic parish church, the Ruta de la Piedra and the Museo Eduardo Barreiros each offer a different focus. You can also choose routes by length and format: there are linear routes that lead to or from Valdemorillo, and a circular route that stays entirely within the municipality.
Hiking routes of different lengths
The Senda de Colmenarejo a Valdemorillo (R14) is a linear route from Colmenarejo to Valdemorillo. It is 16.2 kilometres long and classified as an easy hiking route. Along the way, it crosses the Aulencia River beside the ruins of a grain mill. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
The shorter, also-linear Senda de Valdemorillo a Villanueva de la Cañada (R19) starts in Valdemorillo, measures 9.7 kilometres and is classified as easy. The route passes the Fortín de la Guerra Civil, an interesting landmark. Here too, it is advisable to check trail conditions before setting out. The two linear routes differ in both length and endpoints; they are separate options, not one shared circular route.
A third option is the six-kilometre Senda de las Ánimas. This circular route stays entirely within Valdemorillo and is also classified as easy. Its landscape alternates between pine forests, holm oak groves and riverside woodlands within the ZEPA 56 Special Protection Area for Birds. Its shorter distance and circular format give it a different profile from the two linear routes.
Church, museum and local heritage
The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural and is considered an example of Late Gothic Castilian architecture. Its construction dates from the late 15th century to the first third of the 16th century; it was completed at the end of the 16th century. Inside, ribbed star vaults of different designs span the space. Their ribs and arches rest on wall-mounted piers with mouldings. The effect of the vault can also be understood through its construction: the articulated piers carry the arches up to the ceiling surfaces.
The Ruta de la Piedra offers a different way to explore the area’s heritage: this multimedia route features 24 selected points of interest. Plaques mark the locations, and QR codes link to video guides. The Museo Eduardo Barreiros, by contrast, focuses on vehicles and technology: its 800 square metres of exhibition space house a permanent collection and extensive document archives. The interactive exhibition includes cars, trucks and tractors, as well as an EB6 diesel engine cut open for demonstration purposes.
The surviving parts of the former factory complex also tell the story of Valdemorillo’s ceramic industry. They are specially protected as a significant part of the region’s industrial heritage; the protection decision dates from 31 March 2026.
Landscape and annual celebrations
Valdemorillo is one of the 19 municipalities that form part of the protected Parque Regional del Curso Medio del río Guadarrama y su entorno. The Embalse de Valmayor reservoir is also nearby. Water sports such as sailing and fishing are practised there; the area includes lakeshore ecosystems, holm oak groves and flooded areas. If you plan to take part in water sports there, check the current access rules beforehand.
Several traditions have their own distinctive character in the events calendar. During the Romería de la Virgen de la Esperanza, the image of the Virgin is carried from the parish church to the Ermita de Valmayor. This recurring June celebration includes a picnic and the El Rondón dance; the exact date varies. El Rondón is also revived every year through competitions during the patron saint festivities. These celebrations last a week and include, among other events, a bullfighting event and bull runs. Dates and programmes change from year to year.
Visits to CUMVAL must be arranged in advance; check the current procedure beforehand.
