Villafeliz De La Sobarriba combines a clearly defined cultural focus with a regional hiking option. The highlights are the parish church and its main altarpiece, medieval connections, and the traditional stories about wells in the Sobarriba; Route C also passes through the village. For finding a place to stay, Casa Rural FONDA MON is a specific option, as this rural accommodation is associated with Villafeliz.

Church Art in the Parish Church

The parish church’s Churrigueresque main altarpiece has five vertical picture panels and two tiers. It comprises nine panels: the four upper ones depict the Evangelists, while the central one shows Christ in the Shroud. Another Baroque depiction on the altarpiece shows Saint Roch with a dog. The church furnishings also include a Baroque polychrome wooden sculpture of the Immaculate Conception with estofado decoration. An inscription associated with Christ in the Shroud states that Alfonso Frnz. y Pantoxa, Bishop of León, granted 40 days of indulgence for reciting a Credo before the image.

Historical Connections

On 19 January 1097, Bravolio Gutiérrez sold lands in this area associated with the name “Villa Felici”; Villafeliz is documented at least as far back as this date. In 1192, Alfonso IX transferred half of the villa to San Isidoro by royal privilege. Villafeliz is also among the places mentioned in the Fueros de León, proclaimed by King Alfonso V in the 11th century. A Fueros memorandum dating from between 1313 and 1324 mentions the village in detail and sets out payments, offerings, dues, and rights between the villages. To understand these references, it helps to distinguish them: the records from 1097 and 1192 concern land and the transfer of part of the villa, while the later memorandum regulates payments and rights.

Wells and Regional Traditions

Wells offer another perspective on the village’s history. In Villafeliz, a well is traditionally associated with the Roman world; similar stories are told in several places across the Sobarriba. Several dressed-stone wells in the Sobarriba are associated with household water supplies and community cohesion. The local Roman tradition and the broader role wells played in everyday life across the Sobarriba thus offer different perspectives on water.

Route C and Accommodation

Route C, a circular hiking trail, adds a regional activity to the itinerary. It starts and ends in Villalboñe and passes through Villafeliz as well as Carbajosa and Santovenia. The route is about 10 km long and is considered an easy-to-moderate hike. Unlike the church and history topics, which are tied to the village, the circular route passes through several places; you can include it in your plans as a standalone hiking activity.
