Santa Colomba de Curueño offers two distinct ways to plan a trip: sacred and older local history on the one hand, and trails through the natural surroundings on the other. The municipality includes a narrow valley with pastureland and sedimentary areas; at the same time, its history stretches from the Castillo de San Salvador, documented since 927, to hermitages and the parish church. There is also a pilgrimage on 26 July, cycling and regional cuisine.

River valley and landscape in the municipality

The municipality of Santa Colomba de Curueño lies in a narrow valley that extends along the lower reaches of the Curueño River to its confluence with the Porma. Pastureland and sedimentary areas form part of this landscape. Alongside the stories of its buildings and settlements, the natural surroundings and their trails offer another set of things to explore during a stay. If you would rather follow a named route than choose from hiking trails in general, consider the Ruta de La Trapa - Ermita de Santa Ana.

Castle, hermitages and pilgrimage

The Castillo de San Salvador has been documented since 927. Its remains lie on the left slope of the Curueño River, opposite the village of Santa Colomba de Curueño. In the 16th century, the Ermita de Santa Ana was built on the site of the castle, incorporating parts of the castle structure. The histories of the two buildings are therefore directly connected: the hermitage was not built at an arbitrary new location but incorporated parts of the older complex. This makes the site's transition from an early castle to later sacred use a tangible historical point of reference.

The traditional pilgrimage to the Ermita de Santa Ana takes place on 26 July. It includes traditional music, Mass and a picnic with bollos preñados and soft drinks. The date and these elements make the celebration an important feature alongside the building's history: it is not only about the hermitage itself, but also about a recurring local tradition. If you plan to travel for the pilgrimage, check the dates for the year in question.

The Ermita del Santo Cristo has a different architectural character. Dating from the 17th century, it stands by the road. Its features include an exterior portico with railings and a pebble floor. The parish church of Santa Colomba de Curueño is also part of the town's artistic heritage; it has exceptional carvings, altarpieces and ornaments. These details set the buildings apart: the portico and floor stand out at the Ermita del Santo Cristo, while the work inside the parish church and on its altars is a distinctive feature.

Hiking trails, elevation and historic sites

Santa Colomba de Curueño has hiking trails through the natural surroundings, and cycling is another listed activity. The Ruta de La Trapa - Ermita de Santa Ana follows a more specifically described course: it starts in Santa Colomba, crosses the river and then climbs along a forest track. The start in the village, river crossing and climb form a clear sequence. Check trail conditions and signage locally before setting out.

The La Trapa plateau lies at an altitude of 1,161 metres and is a geodetic survey point. The nearby La Trapa and Barberín lagoons can also be seen from the Ruta de La Trapa - Ermita de Santa Ana. The Alto del Sesteadero route, by contrast, focuses on a different historical point of reference: it passes the forgotten site of the Ermita de Santa Elena. The two routes therefore differ in the points of interest mentioned: one features a river crossing and climb with nearby lagoons, while the other passes the site of a former hermitage.

Regional cuisine as another highlight

Several restaurants in Santa Colomba de Curueño serve typical regional dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. Culinary discoveries thus complement the cultural and natural attractions, without limiting your stay to a particular restaurant or dish. For planning purposes, the main themes are easy to distinguish: the historical side stretches from the castle to churches and hermitages, the routes offer different natural and historical points of interest, and regional cuisine adds another distinct feature.
