Castrocontrigo lies on the Eria and brings together pre-Roman settlement history, Roman remains, chocolate history and a landscape of fields and forests. This gives you several themes to explore as you plan your trip: local history, nature, regional cuisine and the tradition of chocolate-making.

River landscapes, forests and biodiversity

Castrocontrigo lies on the banks of the Eria. Rye fields, holm oaks, oaks and resin-producing pine forests shape the landscape around the village. The municipality currently has ZEPA status as a special bird protection area; before travelling, check the current official regulations. A total of 187 species of terrestrial vertebrates have been recorded in the area: 122 bird species, 42 mammal species, 13 reptile species and 10 amphibian species. Birds are numerically the largest of the four groups.

Fishing is also a distinct feature of the Eria. The Coto de pesca de Manzaneda trout fishing area covers a five-kilometre stretch of river. It runs downstream from the old bridge at Villar del Monte to the mouth of the Río Pequeño tributary in the centre of Castrocontrigo. If you would like to fish there, check permits, the season and regulations in advance; these may change.

Pre-Roman and Roman traces

The pre-Roman settlement of Aria stood on what is now Cerro del Castro. After the Roman conquest of the Aria Valley, a Roman camp was built on the plain between Cerro del Castro and the river. The two sites mark different historical periods: Aria stood on the hill, while the Roman camp was on the plain between the hill and the river. A Roman bridge over the Eria stands on the Roman road from Castrocontrigo to Corporales.

A cross resembling the original was erected at the summit of Cerro del Castro in memory of the victory of Doña Urraca and her son Alfonso Raimúndez over the Portuguese. The large cross symbolises Doña Urraca, and the small one her son. The route to the Yacimiento El Castro archaeological site begins south of the village centre on the Camino del Vía Crucis, which branches off the C-622; after about 250 m, you will reach the site.

Chocolate-making, mills and regional cuisine

The Museo del Chocolate displays traditional machinery and detailed explanations of the production process. This includes grinding the grain in a mill made of heated granite stones. The production process thus adds another cultural theme to the archaeological topics. The mills in Castrocontrigo also help people today better understand the history and life of the villages.

Alubias a la bañezana and frog legs are part of the regional cuisine of the comarca and the province of León. They are also among the standout dishes associated with Castrocontrigo. The story of chocolate-making and the regional food culture sit alongside the village’s historical and landscape themes.

A tradition through the year

On 15 May, the San Isidro tradition in Castrocontrigo includes a procession to the Cruz de los Frutos and the blessing of the fields. This connection with the fields adds a local tradition to the archaeological and cultural themes.
