The Los Calderones Gorge was formed by the erosion of the Los Calderones stream and the karst dissolution of the limestone. The Los Calderones route starts in Piedrasecha. The gorge and the route offer different starting points for planning a trip: a geological landscape and a named starting point for a hiking route.
Landscape and Nature
Pinar de Camposagrado is a reforested area dating from the mid-1950s and is rich in forest bird species. How easy the birds are to spot varies by season. If wildlife watching is a priority, consider the timing of your trip. Unlike the geological origins of the gorge, the focus here is on the forest’s birdlife.
Religious Sites and History
The ruins of a Cistercian monastery are located in Otero de las Dueñas. In the municipality of Carrocera, the Cueva de las Palomas contains a simple rock chapel where the image of Nuestra Señora del Manadero is kept. The two sites represent different forms of religious heritage: monastery ruins and a chapel in a cave.
The Ermita de Camposagrado marks the boundary between the municipalities of Rioseco de Tapia and Carrocera. A pilgrimage takes place there on the second Sunday in June; if you are planning your visit around it, check the local arrangements in advance. A local legend links Camposagrado to a great battle during the Reconquista. According to tradition, the chapel there was built in gratitude to the Virgin Mary.
Another aspect of remembrance is the Hito de la memoria histórica monument. It stands in the municipality of Carrocera, on the road to Benllera, and was created by the Leonese sculptor Amancio González. This work of remembrance culture adds a different cultural focus to the religious sites and traditions.
Crafts and Local Events
In Piedrasecha, Artesanía de Diego offers ceramics and courses. If taking a course is important to your plans, check the details in advance. Otero de las Dueñas is also home to the artisan cheese producer Quesos Campar de Lilaina. These offer a way to explore different local specialties: ceramics and courses from one provider, and artisan cheese-making from a producer.
Cuevas de Viñayo’s festival calendar lists San Nicolás de Bari on 9 and 10 September as feast days. If you would like to plan your trip around these dates, check the current schedule in advance. Together with the pilgrimage on the second Sunday in June, this gives you specific guidance for visits linked to religious occasions, although the two events do not need to fall within the same travel period.
