The route from Fresneda de la Sierra Tirón to the Pozo Negro lagoon begins in the town and passes through the Río Tirón valley. Its specific waypoints help you plan your nature outing; Fresneda also offers fly fishing and historic attractions as separate points of interest.

Pozo Negro: Route through the valley and forest

The route to Pozo Negro begins in Fresneda de la Sierra Tirón, after you cross the bridge over the Río Tirón toward the road to Ezcaray. It passes through the Río Tirón valley, with riparian forests, beech forests and pine forests. Your destination is Pozo Negro, a small lagoon of glacial origin at the foot of Pico Otero on the northern slope of the Sierra de la Demanda.

The phrase “of glacial origin” refers to its formation in connection with glacial processes. Together with its location on the northern slope of Pico Otero, this gives the destination a clear geographical context. The route thus leads from the Río Tirón valley to a lagoon on a named mountain and slope in the Sierra de la Demanda.

After about 5.5 kilometres, you will reach the Tres Aguas recreation area and refuge. You are advised to leave your vehicle there and continue the route on foot. Take this change into account when planning your journey: the approximate distance takes you to Tres Aguas, where the section described begins on foot.

The name Tres Aguas comes from the confluence of the waters from the Reoyo, Ticumbea and Pozo Negro ravines. The Las Zarras recreation area is also a useful landmark: the route leads there along a path branching off to the right of the road. The directions differ for planning purposes: at Tres Aguas, they concern leaving your vehicle and continuing on foot; at Las Zarras, they concern the turnoff from the road.

Fly fishing as a separate point of interest

The Fresneda fishing area is a traditional fly-fishing spot and adds a different activity to the nature route. If you want to fish there, check the current fishing regulations before taking part. This helps distinguish an interest in fly fishing from planning the route to Pozo Negro: the landmarks mentioned are important for the route, while current rules apply to fishing.

Historic buildings in Fresneda

The parish church of Fresneda de la Sierra Tirón was built in the mid-16th century. Other attractions include a bridge dating from the 16th century and the Ermita de la Virgen de los Remedios. Both the church and the bridge date to the 16th century, although the church is dated more specifically to the middle of that century.

The main altar inside is the work of Don Rodrigo de la Haya.

Choose accommodation based on your reason for travelling

If you are more interested in the local attractions, the parish church, bridge and hermitage offer other cultural points of reference. The route, fly fishing and architectural history provide different focal points for planning your trip; you can decide which reason for visiting is most important for your stay.
