An environmental trail begins at the square in the Cótar district, while another is laid out as an almost twelve-kilometre circular route that reaches the village. Other walks pass through green spaces or offer opportunities to observe nature. This gives you several different focuses to choose from when planning: a specific distance, distinctive landforms and seasonal observations.

Between small valleys and the paramo

The environmental trail “Biodiversidad, Geomorfología y Paisaje en el entorno de Cótar” begins at the square in the Cótar district. It passes through small valleys and reaches the higher-lying areas of the paramo plateau. The route makes the changing landscape its central theme: geomorphology describes landforms, and here the transition from the hollows to the higher-lying areas becomes tangible. The emphasis is therefore on the terrain and the landscape.

Circular route through farmland and forest

A walk on 25 March 2025 followed the environmental trail “Uniendo barrios: Villímar – Cotar”, an almost twelve-kilometre circular route. Along the way, it reaches Cótar after crossing extensive farmland interspersed with small wooded areas. The route also passes through woodland of cypress and Laricio pine. The circular route and approximate distance provide a specific guide to the length; at the same time, the alternation of farmland and woodland, along with the named tree species, shape the landscape.

Nature watching and green urban spaces

A nature walk held in 2019, titled “Naturaleza y Biodiversidad en el entorno de Cótar”, began in Cótar. Possible sightings include flowering plants, shrubs and trees, as well as numerous bird species. Signs of mammals, reptiles and amphibians may also catch your eye. This sets it apart from routes that focus on landforms or the transition between farmland and woodland: here, the focus is on plants, birds and other signs of animal life.

The “Barrio de Cótar – Alto de las Torrecillas” walk passes through green spaces in the city and the municipality. It offers a distinct perspective on green spaces in the urban and municipal surroundings. Together with the routes through small valleys, paramo areas and woodland, it gives you a range of nature-related themes to help you find your bearings in Cótar.

A cultural connection

A 2024 report mentions the patronal festival in honour of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes on 24 September in Cótar and Villatoro. If the festival is relevant to your trip, check the exact event date in advance.

Choosing the right routes for your stay

When planning, you can start by weighing up distance, landscape and nature watching. The almost twelve-kilometre length gives you a specific guide to the circular route; the trail through small valleys to the higher-lying areas of the paramo offers a different focus. The nature walk centres on possible sightings of plants, birds and signs of animal life. This lets you shape the nature-focused part of your stay in Cótar around the themes that interest you most.
