Salceda offers a range of thematic points of interest: trails along the Caselas, mills, an ancient oak landscape and historic architectural styles. When planning your trip, it helps to prioritise according to your interests: those who like to focus on the river will look for different highlights than those primarily interested in mills, architecture or natural features.
Trails along the Caselas and a riverside spot
The Senda do rĂo Caselas begins in the parish of Santa MarĂa, at the place called As Pontes.
The Ărea recreativa das Covas in the parish of Santa MarĂa is a riverside area on the Caselas with tables, benches, a barbecue area and the Fonte das Covas spring. The two Caselas-related sites have different focuses: the Senda is a trail with a named starting point, while the Ărea recreativa is a riverside area with facilities for spending time outdoors. If you are planning around specific amenities, check their current status here too, as facilities can change.
Mills and cultural traces
The Parque etnogrĂĄfico dos muĂños do rĂo Caselas comprises five mills. This number defines the park as an ensemble rather than limiting it to a single mill building. The MuĂño da Laxe, also known as dos Cregos, was established as an interpretation centre and opened for visits and various activities. If you are planning a specific visit, it is advisable to check what is currently available in advance.
The Senda Fluvial ValentĂn Paz Andrade includes an area dedicated to the writer ValentĂn Paz Andrade. The Pombal de Antero is also located along this Senda; it was built by Ălvaro Antero PĂ©rez Troncoso in the 1960s. The Senda therefore has both a literary connection and the story of a structure with a named builder and period.
Architectural heritage and ancient oaks
The north entrance of the Igrexa Parroquial de Santa MarĂa de Salceda is known as the âPuerta de la Reinaâ (Queenâs Gate) and commemorates Queen Aragonta. The name gives this entrance its own historical point of reference.
Pazo de Aballe is a two-storey Baroque building with a U-shaped plan. The U-shape describes its layout, while Baroque identifies its architectural style; the two storeys add a specific feature of the building to this description. Pazo Pegullal has a geometrically designed garden, adding an aspect of garden design to the selection. Those interested in architectural heritage can thus explore different aspects: layout and style on the one hand, and geometric garden design on the other.
The Carballeira de XabarĂs includes oaks that are over 100 years old, among them one estimated to be around 220 years old. The estimate of around 220 years gives a concrete sense of scale, but remains explicitly an estimate. The oak landscape therefore offers a different focus from the mills, historic architectural styles and garden: here, the age of the trees takes centre stage.
