Rock art, a wayside cross in the town centre and a route through an area of native woodland give Moscoso several distinct attractions for a stay. The Cruceiro de Moscoso stands in the town centre; the PR-G 164 Senda da Fraga do Barragán runs near the village. There are also several named petroglyphs and festivals. When choosing a destination, you can therefore decide whether to include archaeological sites, cultural heritage, scenery or a festival date in your plans.

Rock art: motifs and access

The O Gorgoreiro and Casa da Rapadoira petroglyphs feature circular designs, cup marks and a foot-shaped motif. Despite weathering over time, circular designs and crosses remain visible at the Outeiro do Mar petroglyphs. The A Peixeira petroglyph is also known as the Petroglifo da Pereira; various carved coviñas can be seen there. The named motifs therefore vary, although circular designs appear at several sites.

The Outeiro do Mar petroglyphs can be reached on foot from the village of Moscoso. The A Peixeira petroglyph is in the parish of Moscoso and can also be reached on foot. When choosing between these two destinations, you can consider both their shared pedestrian access and their different motifs.

Cultural heritage in the village and in Moscoso

Mestre Cerviño is believed to have created the Cruceiro de Moscoso, which stands in the town centre. The parish church of San Paio de Moscoso is one of the prominent heritage parish churches in Pazos de Borbén. The rock carvings at Coto da Lameira in Moscoso were declared a BIC in 1975. These examples offer different cultural points of interest: an attribution of authorship, a prominent parish church and a dated BIC designation.

The Senda da Fraga do Barragán

Near Moscoso, the PR-G 164 Senda da Fraga do Barragán runs through an area of native woodland, with mills, bridges, levadas and the remains of the settlement of A Cidade. The route area therefore includes both woodland and built features, as well as elements of settlement history. Near Moscoso, the PR-G 164 can be accessed via the PO-252 road between Mondariz and Moscoso, and via the parish of San Salvador de Xunqueiras. These landmarks provide a different way to access the route from the walking routes to Outeiro do Mar and A Peixeira.

Festivals and seasonal planning

The Festa da Chula takes place every year on the first Sunday in September; the date may vary from one edition to another. If you are planning your trip around it, check the date of that year’s event in advance. The Virxe dos Remedios festival is also celebrated in Moscoso.

The Piscina Municipal de Moscoso is an outdoor swimming pool. As a seasonal facility, its operating dates may vary; check the current opening dates if you are planning a visit.
