In Arbo, the Miño and the pesqueiras shape many of the experiences to discover: you’ll come across them on routes, at viewpoints, and in the local tradition of lamprey fishing. There are also trails of varying lengths and with different focuses, historic sites, and wines with a designation of origin. When planning, it’s worth keeping specific route details and dates in mind rather than trying to combine every experience into a single outing.

Routes along the Miño and to the Pesqueiras

The Ruta de la Lamprea starts at the access point to Playa Fluvial de Sela. Information panels lead to the emblematic pesqueiras along the Miño; the route’s second required stop is the Centro de Interpretación del Vino y la Lamprea ARABO. This connects the fishing structures with a place that highlights wine and lamprey. As visiting arrangements may change, check them before your visit.

The Sendeiro dos Pescadores also follows the Miño. It is more than ten kilometres long and partly runs along paths used by fishermen to reach the pesqueiras. The trail is part of the Natura 2000 network. The different details of the route and the Ruta da Moura are worth comparing: the Moura is a 9.5-kilometre circular route with an additional 1.5-kilometre out-and-back detour. It passes through the abandoned village of Trabazos, whose ruins are highlighted as a historic feature, and the settlement of Sande, among vineyards. From Sande, it offers views of Portugal. Check the conditions for each route in advance.

The Sendero Miño-Deva offers another perspective. It starts in Estación, in the parish of Arbo. From a viewpoint there, you can see the Miño, the Deva where it flows into the Miño, the pesqueiras, the International Bridge, the river beach at Estación, and Portugal. This gives you several perspectives on the river landscape from a single, specific location.

Cultural Heritage and History

The pesqueiras are more than a recurring feature of the trails: they are part of the culture, traditions, and way of life of Arbo’s residents. These structures are significant architecturally and ethnographically; they are still used to catch river lamprey with a traditional, artisanal, sustainable, and environmentally friendly technique. The Ruta de la Lamprea and the Sendeiro dos Pescadores offer different contexts in which to encounter this heritage.

Another historic destination is the Romanesque bridge of San Xoán de Mourentán. It is associated with a battle against French troops in February 1809, during the Peninsular War. The Miño rapids also have a documented connection to film: in 1957, some scenes for the film Orgullo y pasión were shot there, in the municipality of Arbo. These two details place history in different settings—one at a structure, the other along a stretch of the river.

The Romeira de San Fins takes place on Mount San Fins on 1 August. Believers from the Concello de Arbo and neighbouring municipalities make a pilgrimage there for the feast day. If you’re interested in religious traditions, this date is a specific point of reference for planning your trip.

Wine, Lamprey, and a Recreation Area

Arbo’s wines belong to the D.O. Rías Baixas designation of origin. A tasting of dried lamprey prepared in various ways is part of the Festa da Lamprea Seca, held on the second weekend of August in the traditional Carballeira de Turbela. The programme also includes D.O. Rías Baixas wines, an arts and antiques market, and cultural activities. Dates and programmes may change; check them before your trip.

The San Antonio recreation area covers 3,000 m². Its facilities include a children’s playground, an outdoor fitness area, a raised bridge over the pond, and tables and benches. Ducks usually live in the pond. This spot complements the trails and historic sites with a different kind of outdoor space.
