An Iron Age hillfort and a bathing and leisure area on the Río Umia show two different sides of Lantaño: archaeological traces and time by the water. There are also churches, a pazo with a distinctive winemaking feature, and local festival traditions. For travel planning, the area can therefore be considered according to specific interests: early settlement, sacred architecture, festival days, or a focus on the river and paths.

Archaeology and cultural heritage in Lantaño

The Castro de Rial is an Iron Age hillfort with a single rampart and natural embankments for defence. A Neolithic burial mound is also cited in the area of the castro as evidence that Lantaño has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. Early settlement history and Iron Age fortifications thus emerge as distinct historical layers.

At Pazo Torre de Penelas, a tower connects two buildings. The pazo is classified as historic cultural heritage. Winemaking there also has a distinctive feature: the winery uses egg-shaped containers made of Galician granite for vinification and ageing. Architecture and viticulture thus offer two different points of interest for anyone interested in Lantaño’s cultural heritage.

The Iglesia de San Pedro dates back to the 12th or 13th century and was given its present Baroque appearance in 1693. The Capela de Santo Domingo was built in the 17th century; the Capela de San Bieito dates from 1675 and was later altered. These construction dates offer different historical reference points rather than reducing the religious buildings to a single period.

The Cruceiro do Culebrón, the largest wayside cross in the municipality, features distinctive religious imagery. The snake or lizard figure on its shaft represents the devil in the original sin. In addition to the churches, anyone interested in religious and ethnographic traditions will find another specific aspect of local cultural heritage here.

Festival days and local traditions

The pilgrimage in honour of San Bieito takes place every year on 21 March and 11 July. During the celebrations, you can eat the traditional dish pulpo near the chapel. A cockerel auction, regarded as a tradition handed down from the past, is also held there. As festival arrangements should be confirmed locally, it is advisable to check the programme before travelling.

The municipal festival calendar lists the San Pedro festival in Lantaño on 29 June. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival date, checking the local programme can help. The two San Bieito dates recur annually; by contrast, the calendar entry for San Pedro should not automatically be taken as a statement that it recurs every year.

By the Río Umia and along old paths

Praia Fluvial da Areeira is a bathing and leisure area on the Río Umia. The Roteiro do Monte de Lantaño offers a different connection with the landscape: the route follows the boundary and takes in old paths across Lantaño’s communally used uplands. The bathing and leisure area is the main feature by the river; for the Roteiro, the boundary and old paths are what stand out. Trail conditions can change, so check the current situation before planning the route.

This makes it easy to distinguish between interests for a stay: archaeology, churches and festival traditions offer a cultural and historical focus, while Praia Fluvial da Areeira and the Roteiro provide different ways to experience water and landscape.
