Aldán can be explored through three distinct highlights: its own Ría, the old fishing-village centre and the route along the Orxás. When planning your trip, you can decide whether local history, scenery or a clearly defined route should take centre stage. The church and bridge reflect different periods of construction, while the Ruta dos Muíños has its own route, described by a specific starting point and destination.
Village centre and architectural history
The Igrexa de San Cibrán de Aldán dates in its present form from 1866. It is considered the finest example of neoclassical art in the municipality of Cangas and was built over an older church. This means that two layers of history can be seen in the same building: the present church and its predecessor. If you are interested in sacred architecture, you can make this transition the guiding theme of your visit.
A Ponte is a stone bridge of medieval origin that crosses the Orxás River shortly before it reaches its mouth. The Ponte de San Cibrán lies on the old road towards Pontevedra. Aldán retains the character of a seafaring village; houses in the old fishing-village centre stand alongside centuries-old hórreos. If you want to take in the village as a whole rather than just individual buildings, these houses and hórreos offer another point of focus.
Ría and route along the Orxás
The Ría is a distinctive landscape highlight: Aldán has its own Ría, sheltered by the headlands of Udra and Punta Couso. The Orxás offers a different focus. The Ruta dos Muíños follows the river from the village of Sobreira to the Bosque Encantado. Its named starting point and destination give the route a clearly defined course. This distinction can help with your planning: the Ría is the focus for scenery, while the route is a clearly defined walking option along the Orxás.
The Finca de O Frendoal, popularly known as El Bosque Encantado, came under the control of the Cangas Town Council and was restored and prepared so that local residents and tourists could admire it. If you plan to visit, check the local conditions in advance.
Festival date and getting around
The Danzas Ancestrais de San Sebastián takes place on 20 January; the festival is recognised as a Galician festival of tourist interest. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the event details for the relevant year.
The location of the Pazo Torre de Aldán can also help you find your way: from Cangas, take the PO-315 towards Bueu; after 6 km, the pazo is in the centre of Aldán. It is privately owned and is not open to visitors. Check road conditions before setting out.
