Valdoviño brings together the Atlantic coast and a lagoon landscape, with trails, surf culture and historic sites. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping the different highlights of the area in mind: the coast is all about the beach, lagoon and birdwatching, while the museum and cultural sites offer different insights. A reservoir and seasonal events are also among the options described.
Lagoon, beach and trails
The approximately 3-kilometre-long A Frouxeira Beach borders a lagoon on one side and cliffs on the other. Together, Valdoviño Beach and Lagoon form a protected natural area designated as an “Espacio Natural en Régimen de Protección General”. Here, beach and lagoon landscapes meet in one place—two defining features of the coast.
An unpaved path runs along the lagoon’s eastern shore, with a birdwatching station and information panels. The Senda da Lagoa da Frouxeira is described as a flat, linear route of about 2.4 kilometres. It runs between the small beach at Frouxeira and the area around the AC-116. If you are choosing trails based on their stated length and layout, this route offers specific details to go by; the shore path, by contrast, is distinguished by its observation station and information panels.
Surf culture and seasonal dates
Pantín - O Rodo is considered an outstanding surfing destination in Galicia. The Pantín Classic has been held on a beach in Valdoviño since 1988, between late August and the first week of September. The dates may vary from one edition to the next. If you want to plan your trip around a specific event, check the dates in advance.
The Océano Surf Museo complements the surfing experience with a look at its history: it opened in December 2017 and is Spain’s first museum dedicated to surfing. The exhibition traces the development of surfing in Galicia from its beginnings to the present day. Texts, plans, illustrations, original objects, photographs and audiovisual media offer different ways to explore the subject. The beach and the museum therefore have different focuses: outdoors, the surfing destination takes centre stage; in the museum, it is the history of the sport in Galicia.
Reservoir and events
In summer, the calm waters of the As Forcadas Reservoir provide the setting for annual introductory courses in dinghy sailing and canoeing. The annual programme may vary; check the dates if you want to plan your trip around a course. The Club Náutico “As Forcadas” has facilities for storing boats. A jetty provides access to the reservoir from the parish of Vilaboa.
Another seasonal event is the Baixada das Carrilanas de San Mamede, held in August and now in its more than twentieth edition. Dates may vary from one edition to the next. The Pantín Classic and the Baixada both take place in late summer, while the introductory courses are held during the summer. If one of these events or activities is a deciding factor in your trip, check the specific dates for that year.
Historic sites and coastal views
The Castro de A Frouxeira is an ancient Iron Age settlement. It stands on a strategic headland and offers views of the Atlantic and the surrounding coast. The Igrexa de Santa Eulalia de Valdoviño is built in an eclectic style. From its hilltop, the coastal panorama takes in A Frouxeira Beach and Lagoon—a combination of a church setting and landscape views.
The Faro de Punta Frouxeira also offers views of several coastal landmarks: to the northeast, Praia and A Frouxeira Lagoon; to the southwest, the cliffs and the Ermita do Porto. Together with the panorama from the church hill, the lighthouse provides a different perspective on the coast. This means you can focus on historic sites with different views, while the beach, lagoon and trails let you explore the natural landscape.
