In Rois, you can compare an 8.5-kilometre circular trail with riverside and forest sections to shorter routes around Castro Lupario. There are also pilgrimage routes, a river bathing area and prominent cultural heritage sites. This makes it easy to tailor your stay to hiking, cycling, landscapes or culture.

Circular Trails and Hiking

The Ruta das Penicias is an easy circular trail. It starts and ends at the Church of San Mamede de Rois and is 8.5 kilometres long; a shortened half-route is also possible. The trail follows the river and passes through shaded stretches and forests of native trees.

The Ruta do Castro Lupario is also an easy circular trail. In addition to the main route, there are three options ranging from 3.8 to 4.5 kilometres. The route allows you to explore the entire site of Castro Lupario. The north and south walls are visible and well preserved.

Rois’s hiking trails are maintained and signposted. As trail infrastructure may change, check the current conditions before setting out.

Pilgrimage Routes and Cycling

The Camino Portugués passes through Rois. One variant runs between O Sisto and the hamlet of Angueira de Castro through a pine forest. Within the municipality, the Camino de Santiago por la Ría de Muros-Noia passes through Martelo, Codeso, Agrafoxo and Urdilde. It was officially recognised in December 2020. Those who choose it as a route to the Apostle’s tomb may receive the Compostela; check the current requirements in advance. For the Caminos, it is also worth checking the route and waymarking before setting out.

There are various cycling options: quiet, flat roads, small mountain passes and steep climbs, as well as mountain bike trails along the rivers. The range therefore extends from flatter roads to more challenging climbs. Trail conditions and availability may change; check conditions for your planned ride.

River Landscapes and a Break by the Water

Along Rois’s rivers and streams are well-preserved riparian forests with alders, willows and other species typical of the Atlantic forest. At Playa Fluvial de Seira on the Río Rois, there are green spaces and areas for swimming and fishing.

A picnic area with tables and benches was renovated in 2017; there is also a car park. Conditions at the river bathing area vary by season and may change. If you plan to swim or fish, check the current situation before your visit.

Cultural Heritage in Rois

The Pazo do Faramello grew out of the Real Fábrica de Papel del Faramello, founded in 1710. The old mills and their associated equipment can be visited. Guided visits can be booked, with three time slots available. Check dates and availability in advance.

The Cruceiro de Cornes is an ethnographic stone cross dating from 1765. It is located in Cornes on the Camino de Santiago. The Igrexa Parroquial de San Mamede de Rois is a religious heritage church in Rois; it lies on the Camino Portugués, the Camino Portugués da costa and the Ruta do Mar de Arousa e Ulla. The Viacrucis de Sorribas is also in Rois, in Sorribas on the Camino Portugués.

Getting There and Finding Accommodation

Rois is close to the AP-9 and the AutovĂa del Barbanza. The expressway between Santiago de Compostela and the RĂa de Muros-Noia passes through Urdilde in the north of the municipality. Check the current route and road conditions for your journey.
