Monfero Between Forest and Monastic Heritage

Fragas do Eume Nature Park includes Monfero, among other areas, and extends across a total of five municipalities. Its steep slopes preserve the original vegetation of the Atlantic forests. Monfero therefore offers a range of points to consider when planning your trip: trails through forest and mountain landscapes, as well as the history of Santa María de Monfero and the rural Capela da Ascensión. If you are weighing nature against cultural heritage, the specific route details and buildings can help you decide where to focus.

Forest Landscapes and Hiking Trails

One trail crosses the mountains of A Marola and Pena Fesa. Pena Fesa reaches 709 metres and is one of the highest elevations in the province of A Coruña. The Camino de Pena Fesa is a 10-kilometre circular hiking trail in Fragas do Eume Nature Park; it starts and ends in A Marola, in Monfero. Its circular route, length, and start and end points give you specific details to help factor this hiking option into your plans.

The Camiño dos Cerqueiros descends from the pine forests in the higher areas to the lichen-covered forests near the reservoir. The Os Cerqueiros route offers a good insight into all the ecosystems of the nature park. It runs mostly along forest tracks and is suitable for mountain biking. If you are planning to cycle it, bear in mind that trail conditions can vary, and check conditions before setting off.

The routes described offer different points of reference: the Camino de Pena Fesa has a defined circular format and distance, while Os Cerqueiros stands out for its insight into the park's ecosystems, its forest tracks, and its suitability for mountain biking. You can use these route details to choose the kind of outing you have in mind.

Santa María de Monfero and the Capela da Ascensión

Santa María de Monfero was founded by King Alfonso VII in the early 12th century. The church has an octagonal dome with Italian influences. The site thus highlights both its founding history and a distinctive architectural feature. The Capela da Ascensión offers a different focus: it is a small rural chapel with an inscription dated 1763 on its lintel. Set in natural surroundings, it offers excellent views of the Xestoso Valley.

To reach Santa María de Monfero, take the signposted 2.5-kilometre turnoff from the AC-151 at As Travesas to the monastery. Signage and road conditions can change, so check the directions before setting off. To reach the Capela da Ascensión, follow the AC-151 towards Irixoa. After four kilometres, turn left at Xestal towards Val Xestoso, Alto Xestoso and As Pontes. Then take the DP-3902 to the DP-0905 and follow a turnoff towards Restrebas to the chapel. Here too, it is advisable to check the signage and current road conditions.

Another point of reference for the nature park's landscape is its left bank: it can be reached by a local road that passes the Monfero monastery. These directions add a specific road connection to the riverbank to the information about hiking trails and cultural sites.
