Negreira combines a circular walk along the Way of St. James with bridge-building, historic buildings and a distinctive river landscape. For your planning, it is worth considering these topics separately: the walking route has a fixed start and end point, while many of the cultural sites are interesting for their architectural history or special details.

Walking between Negreira and Ponte Maceira

The Ruta de senderismo de los Tres Pazos is a 15.5-kilometre circular walk. It follows the Way of St. James between Ponte Maceira and the town of Negreira, starting and ending at Pazo do Cotón. The route length and set starting point give the walk a clear framework; set aside a dedicated block of time for it rather than treating it as a short walk around town.

Pazo do Cotón has two distinct roles: it is the start and end point of the walk, and it can be visited as part of the Feira do Románico. Since access is tied to the event, check whether and when this option is available during the edition taking place during your trip.

Ponte Maceira offers a distinctive glimpse of architectural history. The medieval bridge has a central round arch, side arches, parapets and a curved bridge deck. Ponte Maceira is also home to the 17th-century Capilla de San Brais de Portor. The bridge and chapel thus bring together two different historical features in the same place.

Architecture and memorial sites

Among the notable buildings is the house of Manuel Negreira in the town centre, considered the finest example of Caribbean architecture in Negreira. Casa da Torre de Bugallido is in the parish of Bugallido, near the church, and dates from around the 18th century. Historically, it belonged to the Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem. A connection to history is also possible at Pazo de Xallas: it may be linked to the Torre de Xallas, which belonged to the Mitre of Compostela and was destroyed by the Irmandiños in the 15th century. The chapel at the Pazo contains a distinctive carving of the Holy Family.

The American Schools tell another chapter in the town's history: they were built in Negreira by emigrants and had areas for recreation and sport, as well as agricultural experimental fields. Colegio de Covas is considered the most artistic of these schools. Public monuments also have their own focus. The stone and bronze Monumento al emigrante is a work by Fernando García Branco from 1997. It commemorates people from the area who left in search of a better life for themselves and their families. The Monumento a Xulián Magariños is a monolith commemorating the Galician writer, who lived from 1904 to 1934.

Other buildings show how different the historical periods can be. Casa de Antelo in Broño dates from 1600, has a small adjoining chapel, is privately owned and is in very good condition. Pazo de Balandrón was built between 1945 and 1955 with modernist and historicist elements; it includes a large garden, a dovecote and several hórreos.

The churches also offer different points of interest: Iglesia de Santa María de Portor is considered one of the most complete Romanesque churches in the Comarca de Barcala; its façade and tower date from the 17th century. Igrexa Parroquial de San Pedro de Gonte was built in the second half of the 12th century and later altered. Inside are two altarpieces with sculptures. Igrexa Parroquial de San Xulián de Negreira dates from the 18th century and has three altarpieces and several images of saints.

River landscapes and local highlights

Two rivers with different features offer a contrast in nature. The final stretch of the Río Corzán has large waterfalls and rapids. The last three kilometres of the Tambre run through a prominent granite gorge between Lueiro in Negreira and Cornada-A Graña in Brión. The contrast is therefore between waterfalls and rapids and a gorge shaped by granite.

Gastronomy and the Way of St. James also come together at an event: the 12th edition of Estrelas no Camiño was presented in 2026 at Finca Casa Barqueiro in Negreira. The Sunday market takes place every Sunday throughout the year; there are various stalls near Pazo do Cotón, and it attracts many visitors. Check locally before your trip to confirm the Sunday date fits your plans.
