Lira reveals itself through clearly distinct themes, from maritime history to coastal views. The former fishermen’s hut Caseta de Pepe do Cuco and the Ruta dos Mariñeiros draw attention to fishing as part of the town’s history; from the Mirador de Lira, Praia de Carnota and Monte Pindo are in view. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between historic working life and a landscape perspective, rather than combining these different impressions into a single theme.

Traces of Fishing Life

The Caseta de Pepe do Cuco is a former fishermen’s hut. It was built around 1940 in Portocubelo, the port of Lira. Its former function makes the building a tangible testament to maritime work. In the Museum of the Caseta de Pepe do Cuco, the most important item in the ethnographic collection is a boat, a canoe or a buceta. The hut and the collection offer different perspectives: the building represents a former use, while the central collection piece is an object from the world of fishing.

Lira’s Architectural History

The history of the buildings can also be traced through different dates. The Church of Santa María de Lira was built in 1760 and extended in 1825; the Hórreo de Lira was built between 1779 and 1814. This presents two different timelines: for the church, the original construction and later extension are linked, while the date for the Hórreo refers to a period of construction.

Coastal Views from the Mirador de Lira

The Mirador de Lira offers views of Praia de Carnota and Monte Pindo. Its features include a stone safety railing and a telescope. Nearby, there is also a picnic area with stone tables and benches, as well as an area featuring replicas of local petroglyphs created by Xosé Cernadas. The viewpoint and telescope direct your gaze towards the named landscape features; the picnic area and replicas add specific facilities and artworks to the viewpoint. The coast is also part of the landscape theme: the rocky stretch connecting Lariño and Lira is described as Galicia’s first marine reserve. Signs to the Mirador are posted from the AC-550. The route follows a two-lane secondary road that narrows at some points. If you drive there, you can take these changes in road width into account when planning and check the road conditions in advance.

The Ruta dos Mariñeiros

The Ruta dos Mariñeiros offers a different perspective. It is a restored fishermen’s path used by fishers travelling from Lira out to sea to fish. Along the way, you can see traditional fishing equipment and the work of the women who mended nets. The route thus links a historic function with visible traces of fishing: the subject includes not only the path itself, but also the equipment and the manual work. If you are choosing between views and cultural history, this route focuses more on the work of the past and the people who mended nets.

Fish Market in Portocubelo

Portocubelo adds a culinary dimension to these themes: the fish market at the port of Lira is associated with the sale of spider crabs and octopus. The selection may vary by season. If you want to plan specifically for these products, bear their seasonal availability in mind.
