Explore Louro through its varied landscapes and natural features: the As Xarfas Lagoon, the dunes at Area Maior Beach and Monte Louro. There are also two routes with distinct themes, as well as the lighthouse at Punta Queixal. Which of these you focus on depends on whether you are most interested in coastal landforms, observing nature, geology or cultural heritage.

Lagoon, Dunes and Beach

The dunes at Area Maior Beach separate the As Xarfas Lagoon from the sea. The dunes are therefore not just part of the landscape, but also the barrier between the lagoon and the sea. Area Maior is a white-sand beach at the foot of Monte Louro. These connections give you three specific points of reference for viewing the coast: the enclosed body of water, the dunes and the beach at the foot of the mountain.

If you want to compare different landforms, it is worth keeping these relationships distinct: the dunes at Area Maior separate the lagoon from the sea, while the beach itself lies at the foot of Monte Louro. This means Louro can be described in terms of more than just its beach. The lagoon and the shape of the mountain are also defining features of the area.

Monte Louro and Its Geological Significance

Monte Louro has two summits and reaches a height of 241 metres. Its distinctive shape offers a different perspective from the lagoon and sandy beach. Its geological classification is also part of the picture: Monte e Lagoa de Louro is designated a Site of Geological Interest of national importance. If you are particularly interested in landforms and their geological significance when travelling, this designation offers a useful point of reference.

The names Monte Louro and Monte e Lagoa de Louro refer to different aspects: the first refers to the mountain, with its two summits and its height; the second is associated with its national designation as a Site of Geological Interest. Together, they provide a guide to a geological perspective on Louro, without losing sight of its beach and lagoon.

Two Routes, Different Themes

The Route da Costa de Louro is ideal for observing different types of dunes, the adaptations of dune flora and the inhabitants of the rocky shore. Its focus is therefore on observing nature along the coast: dunes and plants are just as much in view as life on the rocky shore. The route is also linked to an area in the Natura 2000 network designated as a Site of Community Importance.

The Route do Monte Louro takes a different thematic approach. It introduces visitors to the cultural heritage associated with the area, as well as its geological and ecological features. When choosing between the two routes, you can use this distinction as a guide: the Route da Costa focuses specifically on dune flora and the inhabitants of the rocky shore, while the Route do Monte explores cultural heritage, geology and ecology. Both routes thus offer different ways to discover Louro’s natural features, each with its own focus.

Louro Lighthouse and Directions

Louro Lighthouse is located at Punta Queixal on Monte Louro. To get there, travel from Muros along the C-550 towards Carnota; near Louro, a turnoff to the left leads directly to the lighthouse. Check road conditions before setting out. This gives you directions to this specific destination, while the routes offer their own themes for exploring nature and cultural heritage.
