Wood, rubber and gravity define the Gran Prix de Carrilanas de Esteiro: carrilanas are wooden vehicles with wooden wheels covered in rubber that roll downhill under the force of gravity. This design gives the festival a distinctive cultural identity and makes the carrilanas tradition tangible through a specific object.
Carrilanas: craftsmanship and festival history
The Gran Prix de Carrilanas began in 1988, following a local discussion about reviving the patron saint festivities of Santa Mariña de Esteiro. The carpenters of Esteiro are described as the true inspiration behind the event. In 2021, the festival was recognised as a Festival of National Tourist Interest. There were 33 years between its founding and this recognition.
At the Gran Prix, the carrilanas tradition is considered a sport of inertia. Mechanical innovations and imaginative designs play an important role. Those interested in construction and design will find an approach to the festival that goes beyond music: the ideas behind the vehicles’ designs are also central.
Music, chapel and local history
The Festival das Carrilanas was created to bring Galician music and local bands to Esteiro. The music event is organised by A.D.C. Esteirana de Carrilanas, which introduces Galician music to a wide audience. The specific line-ups vary, so if music is a main reason for your trip, check the programme for the dates you have in mind before planning.
The Chapel of Santa Mariña de Esteiro in Solleiros dates from the 16th to the 18th century. Its history of construction provides an older historical reference point alongside the Carrilanas event, which dates back to 1988.
Along the Río Maior and to Pedra do Cadro
Playa de Esteiro (Muros) is in the centre of Esteiro, away from the national road. The Paseo Marítimo de Esteiro runs through the centre of the parish of Esteiro in Muros, alongside the Río Maior. The beach and promenade therefore offer two clear landmarks for finding your way around the area.
The area around the mouth of the Río Maior forms an appealing seascape. Nearby, you can go for a walk and see boats.
The Ruta Pedra do Cadro can be walked as a linear route or a loop. From Esteiro, it runs for just over six kilometres to Pedra do Cadro. The trail follows dirt tracks and has some waymarkers; their condition may change. It is therefore a good idea to check the latest route information before setting out. Pedra da Pía is another striking granite formation on the Ruta Pedra do Cadro.
