A 150-metre-high shifting dune, coastal trails of varying lengths and bobbin lace give Camariñas several distinct highlights. You can plan your stay around the landscape, outdoor activities or culture.

Coast, Ría and Lighthouse

The Ría de Camariñas is a small, sheltered ria. Near Ponte do Porto, its waters meet the Río Grande. At Monte Branco, a 150-metre-high shifting dune rises in the Bay of Trece; endangered plants of the Corema album species grow at its foot. Playa do Trece is just over 1,250 metres long and is known for its fine sand and waves.

Playa Area da Vila offers a different coastal scene: the unspoilt bay with calm waters lies at the foot of the Ermita da Virxe do Monte. Playa y Área Recreativa de Ariño is surrounded by a quiet pine forest with tables, benches and barbecue areas. These differences make the coast more than just one kind of beach setting.

The lighthouse at Cabo Vilán stands 125 metres above sea level; its light reaches up to 28–30 nautical miles, or 55 kilometres. Cabo Faro Vilán is now home to a museum and an exhibition space. Alongside the coastal trails, the lighthouse and this cultural stop offer distinct reasons to visit.

Hiking Trails of Different Lengths

The PR-G 158 hiking trail starts at the ruins of Castelo do Soberano. It first passes along beaches, coves and cliffs, then continues through upland terrain with views of the Ría de Camariñas. Its main route is 21.7 kilometres long. The Ruta litoral de Camariñas is 19 kilometres long, is classified as a Sendero Azul, and is of moderate difficulty, with two gentle climbs. It starts at the Museo de Manfred Gärdiner in Camelle and ends at Castelo do Soberano in Camariñas. Along the way, it passes through the municipality’s Red Natura area and includes beaches, bird sanctuaries and natural stone sculptures.

The distances refer to different routes: 19 kilometres for the Ruta litoral and 21.7 kilometres for the main route of the PR-G 158. The Camino de los Faros, by contrast, is a 200-kilometre coastal hiking trail with the Arou–Camariñas and Camariñas–Muxía stages. This distinction is useful when choosing a route, without conflating the trails into a single route.

If you want to choose between several activities, the Camariñas Explora programme offers more than 20 routes along the coast and inland. They are designed for different walking speeds and for hiking or cycling. This lets you place an individual marked trail within a broader overview of the options available, without committing to a particular way of getting around.

Bobbin Lace and Local History

Camariñas is considered the birthplace of the famous bobbin lace, which local women make with great skill. The Museo del Encaje de Camariñas promotes knowledge and awareness of this craft. The bobbin-lace tradition has continued for centuries in Camariñas and other places along the Costa da Morte. At the Mostra do Encaixe de Palillos de Camariñas, held annually from Wednesday to Sunday during Holy Week, the daily morning and afternoon sessions begin with demonstrations of lace-making. The municipal lace-making schools of Camariñas, Camelle, Xaviña and Ponte do Porto take part. Check the specific event dates for your trip.

The town’s history also has several facets. The town centre preserves many traditional houses, and its narrow streets evoke the atmosphere of former fishing villages. The Cementerio de los Ingleses was established after the British training ship The Serpent sank in 1890, with only three of its 175 crew members surviving. Today, the cemetery is part of the European Cultural Route, “European Route of Significant Cemeteries”.

The Baroque Ermida da Virxe do Monte dates from the 18th century and stands on a hill of scenic importance. From there, you can see Punta da Barca near Muxía and the Vilán lighthouse. During the pilgrimage on Easter Monday, an image of the Virgin is carried in a procession from Camariñas to the chapel and taken around it three times.
