Torre de Don Miguel combines a striking Sierra landscape with historic streets, church architecture and the history of olive milling. The town lies between the Sierra del Salido and the Sierra de las Jañonas, at the foot of Cerro de la Almenara. The Arroyo de San Juan runs through the town centre; olive groves, pine forests and scrubland surround Torre de Don Miguel.

Historic streets and buildings

In Barrio del Cancillo, narrow, winding streets and projecting passageways preserve the neighbourhood’s distinctive character. Its architecture bears traces of Islamic and Hebrew building traditions. The Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is also an important landmark in the town’s history: since 2019, it has been protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category.

The building brings together several periods. The nave dates from the 15th century, while the chancel, designed by Pedro de Ybarra, dates from the 16th century. Its architectural design reflects the Gothic and Renaissance periods in Extremadura. Those interested in civil architecture will find a noteworthy example in the Casa de la Encomienda. The Rollo Jurisdiccional dates back to 1428; the Ermita del Cristo is a religious monument from the first third of the 15th century.

Oil mills, stream and El Capazo

The Archaeological Park “Los Molinos de La Torre” preserves old oil mills dating from the 15th to the 17th centuries. Four restored mills can be visited via a short, easy walking route. Much of the historic machinery has been preserved, making it possible to follow the traditional olive-milling process. The Archaeological Park “Los Molinos” is part of the ZEPA and ZEC area of Sierra de Gata.

The Los Molinos site on the Arroyo San Juan lies along a path beside the stream, which has since been adapted as a natural swimming area. The site thus brings together the history of the mills and another use of the stream. El Capazo is also linked to traditional olive milling: the recurring festival marks its completion, and its date varies according to Easter. It was recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Extremadura on 25 October 2022.

Hiking and regional orientation

For a shorter hiking stage, the GR 10 E-05 leaves Torre de Don Miguel via the Camino de Gata. The stage is 3 kilometres long and rated moderate. The PR-CC 181 Valle del Tralgas follows a different route: its linear trail is 33.5 kilometres long and ends in Torre de Don Miguel. The two routes therefore differ considerably in length and format. Information may be updated by the trail authorities; check the latest route details before planning a hike.

The Centro de InterpretaciĂłn Comarcal Sierra de Gata provides information on routes, activities and services in the comarca. Displays on regional gastronomy focus in particular on oils and wines. This regional perspective complements the points of interest in Torre de Don Miguel, from historic buildings to mills and hiking trails.
