Explore Jerte through its architectural history and specific nature and trail offerings. Churches, chapels and streets lined with distinctive houses give the town its architectural character; outdoor activities focus on rock pools, hiking trails and seasonal conditions. Plan your visit around cultural heritage, nature and individual routes.

Nature Experiences and Trails

Los Pilones are large pools carved into the rock by fluvial erosion. They lie within the Reserva Natural Garganta de Los Infiernos. The technical term describes how water shapes the landscape: the pools themselves are the result of this process.

The interpretation centre for the nature reserve covers the protected area’s ecosystems, biodiversity and nature trails, as well as the landscape of Los Pilones. Backlit panels, hand-painted murals, models and a large diorama bring these topics to life. The centre is on the N-110 at kilometre 368, in the Los Arenales area, directly at the entrance to the nature reserve. Check current access arrangements before visiting.

In summer, you can swim in the natural pool at Parque El NogalĂłn. Since swimming conditions may vary by season, check the current situation before your visit.

A linear route starts in Jerte next to the tourist office, leads to the Los PapĂşos bridge and returns along the same route. Route information may change; check locally before planning your visit. The PR-CC 02 Ruta Cerezo en flor hiking trail runs near Jerte and the Centro de ReproducciĂłn de SalmĂłnidos. Here too, it is advisable to check the latest route information.

The Barranco Garganta de los PapĂşos has abseiling sections, jumps and slides. Access is via private land and requires advance notification to Jerte Natura. If you are considering canyoning, contact Jerte Natura in advance and check the current access conditions.

Churches and Architecture

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción dates from before the 15th century and was renovated in 1756. Its main altarpiece and side altarpieces are Baroque. The building’s history and its furnishings therefore offer two distinct points of reference in time.

The Ermita del Cristo del Amparo is built of masonry reinforced with granite. Its vaulted chapel contains Baroque stucco work. Both the building materials and the decorative design are noteworthy here.

Calle Coronel Golfín is lined with several coat-of-arms houses that belonged to influential families in the town’s socioeconomic life. Calleja de los Bueyes features typical architecture, with houses characterised by wooden balconies, wooden sun galleries, and half-timbered and earth-built elements. The two streets offer different glimpses of the town’s architectural forms: one through its coat-of-arms houses and former owners, the other through its construction and façade details.

History and Seasons

On 21 August 1809, French forces burned and looted Jerte during the Peninsular War. Plaza de la Independencia commemorates the heroes of Jerte who opposed Napoleon’s troops. Residents who had fled returned and rebuilt the town in its former architectural style.

The wider region extends beyond the town into Valle del Jerte, where the cherry trees blossom in spring, though the timing varies from year to year. The spectacle of the blossoms draws many visitors. The cherries of Valle del Jerte also have their own protected designation of origin. The season-dependent blossom and the regional designation of origin thus represent two distinct aspects of the cherry-growing region.
