Guijo de Coria lies on an extensive plain south of the Sierra de Gata and north of the RĂo AlagĂłn. For planning your trip, landscape, birdwatching and culture offer different areas of focus: alongside characteristic vegetation and named natural areas, the town has a parish church, a museum, chapels in the surrounding area and several festival dates to explore.
Landscape and Birdwatching
Characteristic vegetation includes holm oak forests and scrubland with rockrose, rosemary, thyme, broom and mastic shrubs. Between Guijo de Coria and Calzadilla lie the Llanos del Guijo, which form the northernmost pseudo-steppe area in Extremadura. The area is therefore characterised not only by woodland and scrubland, but also by this distinctive landscape.
Birdwatchers may spot great bustards, little bustards, stone-curlews and Montaguâs harriers in the Llanos del Guijo; sightings are possible, but not guaranteed. The Embalse de BorbollĂłn is also nearby. It is considered an important bird protection area and offers opportunities for water sports.
Routes and Trail Conditions
A simple, 5.55-kilometre one-way hiking route called âGuijo de Coria luna 1â runs through the area. The route is designed as a one-way trail; check current trail conditions before setting out.
Another route is called âGuijo de Coria â Villa del Campo â Pozuelo del ZarzĂłn â Dehesa â Guijo de Coriaâ. It includes stony and sandy sections as well as livestock gates. Check current conditions in advance for this route too.
Church, Museum and Chapels
The Iglesia parroquial de San Esteban combines 15th-century Gothic elements with Renaissance work from the mid-16th century. It is considered a notable example of the art of northern Extremadura in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. Its 33-metre-high bell tower was built in 1536. The architecture thus brings together several periods, while the tower adds a precisely dated structure to this art-historical context.
The Casa convento de la Beata MarĂa de JesĂșs dates from the 17th century and houses a museum of traditional objects. Beata MarĂa Ana de JesĂșs was born in Guijo de Coria and was a 17th-century Franciscan tertiary. Her mystical writings can be compared with those of Saint Teresa of Ăvila. The building and her biography each offer a distinct way to explore the townâs history and religious heritage.
The Ermita del Cristo del Valle, also called Ermita del Humilladero, is located nearby. The chapel is in a vernacular style and probably dates from the 15th century or earlier. The Ermita de Santa MarĂa de la ConsolaciĂłn is also nearby. It dates from the 15th century and was rebuilt by the municipal council in 2000.
Festivals Throughout the Year
The pilgrimage in honour of the Virgin of ConsolaciĂłn takes place on the Saturday closest to 1 May. A procession travels from the Ermita de Santa MarĂa to the municipalityâs Dehesa Boyal. A Mass is then celebrated, and the day is spent in the dehesa. If you would like to plan your trip around this celebration, you can use the date given as a guide.
The San Esteban festivities begin on 26 December and last for three days. They include a procession followed by socialising over drinks in the townâs streets. San Blas is celebrated on 3 February with a procession and a Holy Mass; cords are handed out in return for a small donation. If San Blas is a key part of your travel plans, confirm the local details in advance.
