Vilamaniscle combines its location in the Paratge Natural de l’Albera nature reserve with a long-distance hiking trail that passes through the town centre. Visitors planning a stay can see the municipality from two perspectives: as a place in a diverse landscape and as a destination with specific routes to a viewpoint and a church. There is also an illuminated castle, a family winery in the Albera landscape, and a festival that brings jazz and wine together. Vilamaniscle can thus be explored according to your interests in nature, outdoor activities, culture or wine.
The Albera landscape and its wildlife
The Paratge Natural de l’Albera nature reserve surrounds Vilamaniscle. Vineyards, olive groves, and cork oak and pine forests surround the town centre. From the Mirador del Suro Gros, you can see Costabona, Coll del Pertús, Montagut and Serra de Malbosc. Vineyards, pine forests, scrubland, dry grasslands and mountain meadows are also visible from there. The viewpoint therefore brings together named landscape landmarks and different types of vegetation. Wildlife is also part of the area’s natural character: wild specimens of the protected Albera tortoise live within the municipality, and roe deer, badgers, foxes and wild boars are also common. For nature lovers, the expansive view from the Mirador and the municipality’s wildlife are distinct aspects of the Albera landscape.
Hiking trails and getting around
The GR-11 long-distance hiking trail passes through the town centre of Vilamaniscle. The route to the Mirador del Suro Gros starts at Plaça Major, follows Carrer de Lluís Pagès and Carrer del Nord to the end of Carrer del Nord, and then continues along a rural path. The two descriptions offer different points of reference: the GR-11 passes through the town centre, while the route to the Mirador starts at Plaça Major and leads to a viewpoint. The Església de Sant Gil lies about 200 metres south of the town centre and can be reached from Plaça Major via a paved path. Different details are therefore useful for finding these destinations: the church’s approximate location and paved access, and the route to the Mirador via two streets followed by a rural path.
Culture and wine
The Castell de Vilamaniscle has new lighting that highlights its heritage value and makes it a feature of the town at night. Celler Mas Pòlit is a family winery in the Albera landscape that farms mountain vineyards on slate soils. This gives wine production a tangible connection to the landscape and its soils. The Jazzejada brings a festival of jazz and wine back to Vilamaniscle. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the current event dates to make sure they match your travel dates.
