Ullà can be explored through two distinct themes: in the town, the church, farmhouse and medieval traces take centre stage; the circular trail across the plain passes through apple orchards and approaches the Ter. Ullà lies in the Parc Natural del Montgrí, les Illes Medes i el Baix Ter. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: would you rather focus on architecture and literature, or on the landscape and the route to the weir?

Church, farmhouse and literary traces

Santa Maria d’Ullà was consecrated in 1804, replacing Sant Andreu as the parish church. The Neoclassical church has a cruciform plan and a large dome above the transept. The transept forms the cross arm of the church; at Santa Maria d’Ullà, the dome sits above this part of the floor plan.

Mas Xiquet is a large farmhouse at the highest point in Ullà, with two arcaded galleries. The town is also connected to a literary story: Víctor Català’s stays at Mas Xiquet and her knowledge of the Montgrí Massif inspired the modernist novel Solitud in 1905. This means that a striking farmhouse and a specific link to literary history can be found in the same place.

The gateway on Carrer de la Muntanya may have been one of the gates to the medieval fortified town centre. The date of the Plaça del Font d’Ullà is also uncertain: its present-day layout may date from the 15th or 16th century. These two places offer different perspectives on Ullà’s older architectural history.

Montgrí, archaeological sites and the plain

Muntanya d’Ullà is a 307.9-metre-high peak in the Montgrí Massif. In addition to this landscape, finds from prehistoric times also shape the story of the mountains: prehistoric tools and remains of animals hunted by Homo heidelbergensis have been discovered at Cau del Duc d’Ullà and other sites. These people spent periods of time there.

The circular trail across the plain of Ullà and to the Ter weir passes through apple orchards and approaches the Ter River. Landscape and history meet along the way: La Resclosa, on the trail, was built in 1679. The route also passes a small air-raid shelter from the Spanish Civil War, located near the airfield control hut. These stops connect views of the plain with structures from different periods.

Practical information

There is free parking for more than 30 vehicles at the Ullà roundabout on the C-31, next to Carrer Major. If you want to plan your stay around a particular theme, you can choose between the town’s architectural and literary traces and the landscape and historical features along the circular trail.
