Estartit brings together beaches, islands and fishing history, offering different ways to experience the coast. Platja Gran, the Illes Medes and the maritime routes each appeal to different interests. If you’re looking for a hotel in Estartit, deciding whether beach time, marine nature or fishing heritage should shape your stay can help.
Platja Gran: the beach takes centre stage
Platja Gran de l’Estartit is more than three kilometres long. Its main section on the town side has fine sand and shallow water. This distinction highlights two aspects of the beach: its length refers to Platja Gran as a whole, while the sand and water depth describe the main section. If the beach is an important part of your trip, this gives you a clear idea of its size and character.
The Illes Medes and their marine environment
The Illes Medes lie about one nautical mile off the beach at l’Estartit and are part of the Parc Natural del MontgrĂ, les Illes Medes i el Baix Ter. This approximate distance indicates where the islands lie in relation to the coast; they are also a distinct natural and marine attraction. The Illes Medes are a destination for scuba diving. The port of l’Estartit also has glass-bottom boats and boats for divers. These offer different maritime connections: the protected islands, scuba diving and the types of boats available in the port.
Espai Medes and the exhibition
In the port of l’Estartit, Espai Medes is a centre dedicated to discovering and interpreting the Illes Medes and the town’s maritime culture. The interactive experience is designed for adults and children. In the exhibition “Un viatge al fons del mar,” technology and interactive features introduce visitors to the natural environment, its biological diversity and the richness of the seabed. Alongside seeing the coast firsthand, visitors can also learn about the marine world and its diversity.
Self-guided routes and fishing heritage
The educational Itinerario del Estar y el Tit is a self-guided route for discovering l’Estartit’s fishing heritage and natural landscapes. Activity sheets and games feature the characters Estar and Tit. Another self-guided route, “l’Estartit, terra de pescadors,” explores the town’s maritime origins through its oldest streets. Both routes are self-guided, but focus on different things: one brings nature and fishing heritage together, while the other centres on maritime history and the old streets.
An excursion with Núria is another way to learn about fishing. The fishing boat, which is more than 80 years old, gives visitors the chance to discover the work of l’Estartit’s artisanal fishers. This experience complements the routes with a trip on a fishing boat and focuses on the work of the fishers.
La Pletera and protected areas
Between Els Griells and the Gola del Ter, La Pletera is a typical Mediterranean coastal ecosystem. Separately, the following applies to protected areas in general: please do not enter the dunes and stay on the designated paths.
