In Setcases, high-mountain landscapes, trails through the municipal area, and traces of culture and history come together. The area offers outings of different durations: from a walk of about ten minutes to a circular hike lasting more than an hour. If you’re looking for accommodation in Setcases, you can first decide whether nature experiences, hiking trails or historic sites will shape your stay.

Mountain Landscapes and Trails Around Setcases

Vallter 2000 is located in the glacial cirque of Morens–Ull de Ter, within the municipal area of Setcases. The mountain station offers skiing. Activities there also include Tubby rides, chairlift rides and tobogganing; the specific seasonal program may change. The four official routes of the Parc Natural de les Capçaleres del Ter i del Freser cross the municipal area. They connect the landscape to a larger natural park, while each route has its own distance and level of difficulty.

One circular hike in Setcases is the Circ d’Ulldeter. The natural park’s official route list gives a length of 4.5 kilometers, an elevation gain of 345 meters, and an estimated duration of one hour and 25 minutes. This makes it easier to gauge the time involved than with a short walk. Check the park’s current route updates before setting out.

La Creueta is described as a walk of about ten minutes, with an elevation difference of 50 meters and a distance of just over 300 meters. This approximate time and the figures for the Circ d’Ulldeter provide two different points of reference for planning your day; they refer to different routes. If you’re looking for more than trail markers along the way, the Natura-Local app offers self-guided excursions in the nature around Setcases. It provides advice and route information, as well as natural, cultural and historical descriptions of the trails.

The Ruta del Ter can also be explored on foot or by bicycle: it follows the Ter through five Catalan counties. The first section starts at the Vallter 2000 car park. This means that, alongside individual trails in Setcases, route information is also available for a longer journey along the river.

Waterfalls, Forests and Cultural Landscapes

In the Carboners valley, the Riera de Carboners drops more than 1,000 meters over less than five kilometers, forming a series of waterfalls and pools. The Salt del Cossi d’en Batlló, the highest and best-known waterfall in the valley, is also located there. The Plans de Carboners have a different landscape character: these open areas are ecologically valuable and maintained through traditional extensive grazing. The Baga de Carboners is an old subalpine forest of black pines, considered rich in biodiversity.

A geological highlight lies at the entrance to the Carlat valley, shortly after leaving Setcases. There, the Pedreres de la vall de Carlat include outcrops of sandstone, marble and slate. These rock types offer another perspective on the landscape, alongside its waterways, forests and pastures. On the Muntanya de Sant Miquel, the Bosc de la Baidana is part of an extensive, well-developed old black pine forest.

Local History and Culture

The Església de Sant Miquel de Setcases dates from the late 17th century. Its main altar is an outstanding sculptural work of Catalan Baroque. The Farga de la Llosa tells another story of the area: it was a major proto-industrial site in the 17th and 18th centuries. No building from the forge survives, but iron oxides and slag can still be found in the surrounding area. The site can therefore also be read through the traces of earlier work, not just through surviving buildings.

The Cabanes de la Serra include former cultivated land and hay meadows across terrain with an elevation difference of 500 meters. Their former agricultural use complements today’s cultural landscape of open areas and pastures. A local legend tells of a flowering elder on La Creueta that indicated a safe place. Seven houses were built there, and Setcases grew from them. The Refugio de Ulldeter is also a historical landmark in the mountain landscape: it opened on July 25, 1909, and became Spain’s first mountain refuge. Together, these places offer different ways to explore Setcases’ history—from a local legend passed down through generations to a dated building event.
