When looking for a holiday rental in Riells i Viabrea, three themes can help you choose your destination: the Montseny landscape, Romanesque and medieval buildings, and two routes with different profiles. The PR-C 201 leads to Castell de Montsoriu; the Breda–Viabrea Greenway is intended for walks and cycling.

Montseny, elevations and views

60% of the municipality of Riells i Viabrea belongs to the Parc Natural del Montseny and its area of influence. The MassĂs del Montseny was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978. These two figures refer to different geographical levels: the percentage describes the municipality, while the UNESCO designation applies to the massif. At 1,307 metres, TurĂł de Morou is the highest point in Riells i Viabrea. Torre de Montfort offers a different perspective on elevation and landscape: it stands at 734 metres and provides views over the valley of Riells del Montseny and the upper part of ArbĂşcies.

Romanesque churches and medieval buildings

The Romanesque Església de Sant Martí de Riells del Montseny dates from the 12th century. The small Ermita de Sant Llop is also Romanesque. It stands on Turó de Sant Llop at 246 metres and is surrounded by the Riells and Sant Llop streams. Its main portal dates from 1606. The ermita therefore brings together a Romanesque church and a building element dating from considerably later.

The towers also have different historical roles. Torre d’en Pega, also known as castell de Riells, is a medieval house beside the fields of Mas Can Pega on the edge of the municipality, and was a smaller fortress belonging to Castell de Montsoriu. Torre de Montfort, by contrast, was a medieval watchtower dependent on Castell de Montsoriu; it was built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries. Creu Monumental is included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia.

Routes and rail connections

The signposted PR-C 201 starts at Riells-Viabrea station and ends at Castell de Montsoriu. It passes through Riells i Viabrea and Breda, as well as through cork oak forests and scrubland. The Breda–Viabrea Greenway is 2.27 kilometres long, completely separated from motor traffic, and intended for walks and cycling. It connects directly with Viabrea-Breda station, which is on the R2 line of Rodalies de Catalunya. To choose between the routes, consider your priority: reaching Castell de Montsoriu on the PR-C 201, or walking and cycling along the Greenway.

Riells i Viabrea is also one of the municipalities with a RENFE station for travelling by train to Parc Natural del Montseny. Check the current timetable before travelling, as the station’s assignment to the R2 line may change.
