The FluviĂ  crosses the municipality of Sant Jaume de Llierca from west to east. Between the neo-Romanesque church, local history centred on La Brutau and several walking routes, the town offers different ways to explore. When planning a stay, it is worth distinguishing between church and festival culture, and walks and circular routes.

Church, Festivals and Local History

The Església de Sant Jaume de Llierca is neo-Romanesque and was built between 1856 and 1886. It also preserves wood carvings from the 16th or 17th century, which came from the former church. The figures depict Saint James the Greater, Saint Joseph and Christ in Majesty. Thus, the church brings together 19th-century architectural history and artworks from earlier centuries. This juxtaposition of periods gives the church a distinct cultural and historical focus.

The Festa Major Sant Jaume is celebrated around 25 July, the feast day of Saint James. The Festa de Santa Magdalena is also a lively part of the municipality’s cultural and social heritage. It combines religious elements, folk traditions and social activities in a privileged natural setting. If you would like to plan a stay around the Festa Major, check the date of that year’s celebration before travelling.

The town’s industrial history is also significant: the town centre developed around La Brutau, a large spinning mill on the left bank of the Fluvià. The Pujada a Santa Magdalena de Montpalau passes the industrial architectural complex of the former La Brutau textile factory and its water channel. The route therefore connects its path through the municipality with a tangible piece of local industrial history.

Circular Routes and Walks

The Pujada a Santa Magdalena de Montpalau starts in Sant Jaume de Llierca as a signposted circular route, crosses the FluviĂ  twice and leads to the old fortress of Montpalau. It is considered an easy route for the whole family. If you are looking for a circular route with a named destination, this offers a combination of a walk and a fortress.

For a relaxed walk with little physical effort, the CamĂ de la Central is an easy, well-signposted route suitable for families with children. The CamĂ de Montagut has a different focus: it also starts in Sant Jaume de Llierca and follows the old road that connected the town with Montagut. Rural landscapes predominate along the route. The paths therefore differ not only in their course, but also in what they highlight: a circular route to the old fortress, a relaxed walk or a route along a historic connecting road.

The Ruta biomimètica de la Brutau is 4.26 km long and takes about 1 hour and 4 minutes. Use the time estimate as a guide and check local conditions. Trail conditions and waymarking can also change, so check them before setting out.
