Regencós brings together a stone-built settlement, its setting in the landscape of Quermany Gros, and a layered architectural history. The walls, the Església de Sant Vicenç, and other architectural details differ in form, period, and cultural context. When choosing a destination, you can therefore consider both its location in Baix Empordà and specific traces of the place’s history.
Landscape and village character
Regencós, a small stone-built settlement with narrow streets, lies at the foot of Quermany Gros. Cultivated fields and forests surround the village. At the same time, the plateau-shaped Quermany Gros is a distinctive landscape feature across a large part of Baix Empordà. The settlement’s specific location and the hill’s significance within a broader landscape thus meet here.
Walls, church, and architectural details
The walls of Regencós form a rectangular outline. One corner tower stands in the southwest, and another tower is in the western area. These two positions and the overall shape give the structure a clear form. It may date from the 14th and 15th centuries, so its dating remains uncertain.
The Església de Sant Vicenç was completed around 1815. It has a single-nave church, side chapels, and a polygonal apse. A single-nave church has one main nave; the side chapels supplement it, while the polygonal apse forms its end. The church also has its own historical context: until 1788, it belonged to the parish of Begur. Its approximate completion date and former parish affiliation thus tell different aspects of its history.
Another detail is preserved in the portal of Cases Noves No. 15: the year 1782 and a patriarchal cross. The portal complements the larger buildings with a single architectural feature. Puigcalent is 800 meters from the village of Regencós. There is a group of farmhouses there dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Together, these places illustrate different scales of architectural heritage: from the form of a walled complex and the layout of a church to a portal and a group of farmhouses.
Crafts and festive traditions
The Rajoleria de Josep Ferrer is part of the local craft history and is considered the last surviving evidence of tile-making in Regencós. This adds a craft tradition to the architectural history. La Castanyada in Regencós offers a different kind of cultural experience. This popular festival includes preparing and tasting roasted chestnuts, along with leisure and cultural activities. The festival date given is October 4. If you plan to time your trip around the celebration, check the dates for your preferred travel period.
