Churches dating back several centuries and the Fluvià river landscape give Palau De Santa Eulàlia two specific themes to consider when planning a stay.

Churches and historic buildings

The Església de Santa Eulàlia is a late Romanesque religious building dating from the 13th century and preserves a Romanesque baptismal font. The dating of the Església de Sant Esteve de Palau Sardiaca is different: most experts date it to the 10th century. It replaced an earlier Visigothic church and was added to the castle-palace complex in the 14th century.

The centre of Santa Eulàlia preserves houses from the 16th to the 18th centuries, which surround the parish church. Mas Reig, also known as Can Gelada, preserves 18th-century tile panels. The Castell dels Ardiaques is in Palau de Sardiaca and is currently in a ruined state. Together, these buildings reveal different historical layers: from early religious buildings to houses and tiles from later centuries.

River landscape and nature

The municipality of Palau De Santa Eulàlia lies on the western edge of the Alt Empordà plain, near the left bank of the Fluvià. Here, the river forms pronounced meanders. The municipality’s agroforestry mosaic includes, among other areas, Vall Llobera. Within the municipality, riparian forests, grey herons, ducks, otters and the Fluvià contribute to biodiversity. The river and mosaic thus provide distinctive points of reference in the landscape alongside the historic buildings. Meanders are river bends; here, they shape the course of the Fluvià along the edge of the plain.

Routes and getting there

Two different routes can be compared when planning your journey. The Fluvià cycling route runs between Garrigàs and Sant Pere Pescador, parallel to the river, and passes through Garrigàs, Sant Pere Pescador, l’Armentera, Torroella de Fluvià, Sant Miquel and Palau De Santa Eulàlia; it is designed for walking or cycling. The Volta pel baix Fluvià goes as far as Santa Eulàlia and then follows the Camí del Puig towards Palau. The first route provides a way to plan a journey based on the river, its endpoints and the places it passes through; the second uses Santa Eulàlia and the continuation towards Palau as points of reference. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Road access to Palau De Santa Eulàlia is via the N-II, then the local GIV-6226 road between Garrigàs and Vilaür, followed by a municipal road to the municipality. Check current road conditions before travelling. When choosing a specific accommodation, check its location in relation to your plans and your road journey.
