The Barcelona–Portbou railway line runs through Fornells de la Selva, and its station is in the town centre. The current station building houses the railway museum of the Associació d’Amics del Ferrocarril de les comarques gironines. Visits are available by appointment, so arrange your visit in advance. The station was built around 1920 and has features typical of many stations along this line. The railway line began operating through Fornells de la Selva in 1885. Here, the line’s earlier start of service and the later construction of the current station come together.
Church and historic buildings
The parish church, Església parroquial, is dedicated to the 3rd-century martyr Sant Cugat. Its interior features Gothic forms, three chapels on each side and notable polychrome keystones. The bell tower was completed in 1620, and the main portal features Renaissance forms. These features are found in different parts of the church: Gothic forms inside, Renaissance features on the portal, and a specific completion date for the tower.
Castell de Fornells stands on the site of a demolished former farmhouse. Beside the castle is the chapel of Santa Maria, which dates from 1122 and is now in ruins. Torre del Governador is a fortified farmhouse dating from the 15th century; it retains a round-arched portal with voussoirs and several stone-framed windows. Font de Can Pou dates from 1854. The distinctive surroundings of the castle were used for many years for a live nativity scene.
Culture in town
The Centre CĂvic i Cultural «La Sitja» is housed in the town’s former grain store and has become the centre of year-round cultural activities in Fornells de la Selva. The municipal theatre hosts local amateur and professional theatre productions, children’s films, concerts for all ages, talks and school performances. Fornells de la Selva also celebrates the Fira d’Artesania i LocomociĂł. If the fair is important to your trip, check the specific dates before planning.
Cycling route and landscape
For cyclists, the 35-kilometre Ruta del Pla Gironès Sud passes through Fornells de la Selva. It connects with the Ruta del Carrilet, which you can follow as far as Girona or Sant Feliu de GuĂxols. This is distinct from the one-kilometre model railway circuit beside the station: the two distances refer to a cycling route and a model railway circuit, which are different attractions.
The municipality is characterised by flat landscapes where cultivated land and woodland are interspersed with old farmhouses and estates. This adds the area’s landscape character to its railway and architectural history.
