There are various ways to explore Mieres during your stay: hikes to named destinations, historic buildings and local festival traditions. When planning, consider whether you would rather focus your time on a route or on cultural themes. This can also help structure your accommodation search, without requiring you to plan a fixed daily itinerary.
Choose hiking routes by destination and trail
Two municipal hiking routes lead from Mieres to clearly named destinations. “De Mieres a l’Ermita del Freixe pel camà de les Marrades” connects the town with the Ermita del Freixe. “De Mieres al Santuari de Finestres pel collet de la Devesa” leads from Mieres to the Santuari de Finestres. You can use these destinations to orient yourself on both routes.
“El balcón de Mieres,” by contrast, is a circular hike that climbs from Mieres toward the Sierra de Finestres. Its route leads to the Collet de la Devesa and the Coll de Palomera. From the Coll de la Palomera, you can continue to the Talaia, a viewpoint overlooking the area around Mieres. The “Ruta de los carboneros y el bac. Ruta 3 Mieres” is also a circular route: it climbs from the town of Mieres to Santa Maria del Freixe. These two circular hikes are distinct from the two municipal routes with their named destinations.
The “Ruta de los carboneros. Ruta 2 Mieres” has a different history. It follows paths once used to transport coal and connects the Ruïtlles neighborhood with the Ermita del Freixe. The paths’ former purpose gives this route a historical connection, while its stated trail highlights the link between Ruïtlles and the Ermita.
Building history and archaeological traces
The Església de Sant Pere stands on a small hill above Mieres. This Catalan neoclassical building was erected over an older Romanesque church. In the Església de Santa Maria de Romeria, in the oldest neighborhood, la Cellera, Romanesque remains have been preserved despite extensive renovations. The two churches thus represent different aspects of building history: a newer building erected over a predecessor, and older remains preserved in a renovated building.
The Església de Santa Maria del Freixe also has a long documented history: it has been mentioned in records since 972. At the Poblat i tailaia ibèrics, the visible structure consists of a square dry-stone construction that has been interpreted as a defensive structure. Access is via a forest road connecting Mieres with the municipality of Sant Aniol de Finestres. The Església de Ruïtlles is privately owned and cannot be visited; take this restriction into account when planning your sightseeing.
Festivals and local cuisine
The Processó dels Dolors in Mieres dates back to the 18th century. Setmana Santa includes a Passion play that takes place both inside the Església de Sant Pere and in the streets and squares. Amateur actors perform an excerpt from the Passion of Jesus. Traditional details of the Sant Joan celebrations include a bonfire in Plaça Major, as well as Coca de Sant Joan and Cava, which are handed out. Dates and programmes may change from year to year.
Restaurant Can Met is located at the entrance to Mieres. It serves Catalan and traditional cuisine made with locally sourced products. Specialties include snails “a la llauna,” beef tenderloin from Girona with morel sauce, lamb shoulder and rabbit with snails. As the specialties may change over time, check the current selection before your visit.
Another place to visit is the Hort-JardĂ de Collbahi, which focuses on organic gardening, herbs and remedies. When planning, you can weigh up hikes, building history, festival traditions, cuisine and a themed garden visit rather than trying to fit all your interests into a single day.
