On the historic paving of La Tallada d'Empordà, the original locations of medieval grain silos are marked; the silos date from the 9th to the 11th century. There are also Romanesque churches, a fortified precinct and paths with different points of interest. When planning your trip, you can therefore focus on cultural history, a hiking route with a stated distance, or the landscape along the Ter.

Romanesque Churches and Medieval Traces

Santa Maria de la Tallada was originally the castle chapel. The church is considered one of the best-preserved examples of a single-nave rural church in Baix Empordà. “Single-nave” describes a church interior with just one nave, giving a specific indication of its architectural form. In the historic town centre, the marked locations of the grain silos add to this glimpse of the past: the silos, which date from the 9th to the 11th century, were discovered underground, and their original locations are marked in the paving.

The churches in the surrounding villages each have their own distinctive features, too. Sant Esteve de Marenyà preserves Romanesque wall paintings attributed to the Master of Osormort. Sant Climent de Tor is a 12th-century Romanesque church. The Route de les esglésies romàniques is a 6.4-kilometre circular route from La Tallada via Marenyà and Tor and back to La Tallada. It is designated as an easy hiking route. The circular route therefore takes you to the Romanesque churches in Marenyà and Tor before returning to La Tallada.

La Tallada's fortified history includes a precinct with preserved sections of wall and several towers. From one of the towers, you can walk along the surviving sections of wall and past the other towers. This route offers another way to explore the town's history, alongside its churches and the medieval traces in the paving.

Routes for Hiking, Cycling and Views

If you are looking for a hiking route with a clearly stated distance, the 6.4-kilometre church route provides a useful guide. A separate option is the local route between La Tallada and Tor, designed for cyclists and pedestrians. The two descriptions help you choose based on the type of route: one focuses on a circular route linking churches, while the other is intended for use by cyclists and walkers.

Another option is the Route del puig Segalar. It offers panoramic views of the Gulf of Roses, Empúries, the plains of Alt and Baix Empordà, and Canigó. These views give the route a focus on landscapes, setting it apart from the church routes and the link to Tor. Your choice of route can therefore also depend on whether you would like your outing to focus on historic buildings or wide-open views.

The Ter Landscape and Visitor Information

There is a birdwatching point along the route by the Ter. The route also passes Illa de Canet, in the middle of the river. The island is an example of riparian woodland and typical riverbanks of the lower Ter. The birdwatching point and the island are two features of the route; the observation point is not necessarily located on the island. Between La Tallada and the Ter, the plain forms a patchwork of different fruit tree crops, adding an agricultural dimension to the river landscape.

The Centre d’interpretació l’Empordanet is the starting and finishing point for the municipality's routes. Professional guided tours for the general public are also offered to explore the municipality's natural and cultural heritage. If you are planning to join one, check the current dates in advance. This will help you distinguish a guided tour from a route you choose to follow independently and plan your day accordingly.

There are several specific themes to choose from when planning an outing: the church loop, with its stated distance; the route between La Tallada and Tor, designed for cyclists and pedestrians; or the route by the Ter, with its birdwatching point and river landscape. The views from puig Segalar and the medieval traces in the town centre offer other distinctive points of interest. First decide which of these themes matters most for your stay; this will also make it easier to find suitable accommodation.
