The Dalí Theatre-Museum is housed in the former Municipal Theatre of Figueres. This special place offers a first impression of the many ways the city presents its art and cultural history: from Dalí’s work and Catalan art to medieval architecture. You can decide which themes will shape your stay by considering the museums, historic buildings and Castell de Sant Ferran.

Dalí and the city’s museums

The Dalí Theatre-Museum displays the artist’s largest collection: more than 1,500 works in a range of styles and formats. The collection therefore offers more than one way to approach Dalí’s work; works in different formats and styles are displayed side by side. Another way to explore it is the guided route at Casa Natal Salvador Dalí. It features holograms, talking windows, mapping and visual effects, giant kaleidoscopes and immersive landscapes. If you are especially interested in Dalí, you can experience a comprehensive collection and a staged route as two distinct visits.

The Museu de l'Empordà brings together significant works from the Catalan and Empordà art scenes. Its collections also include archaeology, medieval art and Baroque painting. The museum’s history dates back to 1885, when the first collections from the Museu del Prado arrived. This connects a view of regional art with a collection history that reaches back to the 19th century.

The Museu del Joguet de Catalunya offers a different focus: across three floors, it displays games and toys from around the world. Its collections include industrial games and toys dating from the late 19th century to the present day. The Museu de l'Electricitat de Figueres, in turn, contains hundreds of objects and documents of cultural and historical value. They illustrate the arrival and development of electricity in the region. Together, the museums range from art and archaeology to toys and regional technological history.

Medieval traces and the fortress

The Església de Sant Pere de Figueres has been documented since 1020 and forms the historic core around which the city’s medieval centre developed. The building is predominantly Gothic. An extensive reconstruction in the 14th century shaped the surviving single-nave church with its rib vaults. Here, you can consider the site’s historical role alongside its later architectural form.

The historic-centre route leads to eleven emblematic places connected with Figueres’ identity and with important events and figures from the city’s history. It offers a different framework for exploring the city’s past than a visit to a single church: the focus is on several places and their links to local identity.

Castell de Sant Ferran is Europe’s largest 18th-century fortress. The self-guided visit includes a guidebook, audio files and a map with 14 stops. Check the current booking and presentation details before your visit. A special experience, “The Cathedral of Water,” takes you by jeep through the moats, by inflatable boat into an underground cistern and through underground tunnels. As the details of this activity may change, it is also advisable to check the latest visitor information.

Plan your market visit, cycling and journey

Figueres’ fruit and vegetable market takes place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. If you plan to visit the market, check the market days again before your trip.

For cyclists, the Figueres–Roses route forms part of a network of cycle paths connecting Figueres with Alt Empordà and beyond. It offers a different perspective on the region from the city’s museums and historic sites. Route conditions may change; check the latest information before setting out.

The two railway stations differ in the connections they offer. The conventional station is in the city centre and is served by regional trains linking Figueres with much of Catalonia. The high-speed station offers connections to Barcelona, Madrid, Paris and several French cities; a shuttle bus links it to the city centre. Check the latest train connections and shuttle arrangements before your trip. You can then choose the most suitable way to travel based on which connection is relevant to your plans.
