In Besalú, medieval architectural history can be traced through specific details: the façade of the church of Sant Julià has six archivolts and four capitals. Three depict animals, while the fourth features Corinthian acanthus leaves. The Gothic hall of the Cúria Reial retains a 14th-century wooden ceiling and magnificent pointed arches. In this way, the intricate façade design and the form of a Gothic hall stand side by side as distinct architectural perspectives.
Romanesque Traces and Special Spaces
A Romanesque bridge in Besalú has been documented since the 11th century. The mikveh is an underground Romanesque space built from cut stone, with a narrow east-facing window, a barrel vault and a basin. It may be among the ten best-preserved examples of its kind in Europe. Thus, in one place, the bridge and its long history stand alongside a space whose architectural features can be described through its form and building elements.
Monastic History and Pilgrim Care
The former monastery of Sant Pere de Besalú was founded in 977. The church and hospice of Sant Julià date from the 12th century and were founded by the counts of Besalú to care for pilgrims. These details connect an earlier monastic foundation with the later history of caring for pilgrims. Espai Besalú is an interpretation centre covering the history of the town from its origins to the present; its programme may evolve. For independent exploration, the Besalú tourist office provides maps and information. Check the latest service information in advance if needed.
Lanes, Route and Riverside Path
Besalú’s historic centre can be explored on foot along lanes that lead to an important heritage of medieval monuments. Route No. 1 offers a different option: it runs from Portal dels Horts via Font del Molí and Ronda Fluvial to Pla de Can Batlle, is 5 km long, and has a low difficulty level with barely any change in elevation. For this route, the course and length are specified, while the historic centre’s monumental heritage takes centre stage when exploring the town.
Gardens along Besalú’s riverside path provide a pleasant setting for walks and views. Alongside the lanes of the historic centre, there is also this more scenic way to explore on foot. Conditions on Route No. 1 may change; check its status before setting out.
Events Throughout the Year
Besalú Medieval has been held every year since 1987 on the last weekend of August. If you are planning your trip around it, check the specific dates and programme in advance, as both may change. The Fira de la Ratafia includes the selection of Besalú’s best ratafia of the year; the details may also vary from year to year. While Besalú Medieval takes place during a recurring period, the ratafia selection is the focus of the Fira. If an event is a key factor in your stay, refer to the latest date and programme information.
