The medieval bridge over the Ter gives Sant Quirze de Besora a tangible starting point for exploring the town’s history and riverside landscape. Other features include traces of an ancient settlement, chapels linked to textile history, and paths through the surrounding countryside. Depending on your interests, you can focus on cultural history or outdoor activities.

Bridge, Settlement Traces and Chapels

The Pont de Sant Quirze de Besora crosses the Ter. The medieval bridge was first mentioned in documents in 1516; its construction date is unknown. The remains of an ancient Iberian settlement and some medieval remains can be found at Pla dels Ocells. The layout can still largely be traced on a hill overlooking the Ter—offering a different way to explore the town’s history from the bridge itself.

Two small chapels point to the area’s textile history. The Ermita de Montserrat is associated with the Can Guixà textile factory and lies behind a bamboo grove. The Ermita de Lourdes is linked to Can Trinxet, also known as Can Tomàs, and replicates the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes in France. Their distinct associations make the two buildings separate points of interest, rather than part of a single, unified story.

Trails, River and Landscape

There are several hiking trails in and around Sant Quirze de Besora, passing through varied landscapes and dense forests, as well as to viewpoints. One named route with a different focus is the Ruta de les Fonts, where you can discover the town’s fountains and their surroundings. Along the Ter, the Parc Municipal has a riverside promenade with views of the river.

The GR-3 section from VidrĂ  to els Munts passes through Sant Quirze de Besora and crosses the Ter there via the bridge. The bridge and river are therefore also part of a named long-distance hiking section. By contrast, the Ruta de les Fonts focuses on the fountains and their surroundings. These differences can help you choose what to focus on without combining the trails into a single circular route.

The landscape also has several distinct points of interest. The protected Parc del Castell de Montesquiu includes parts of the municipality of Sant Quirze de Besora and is characterized by dense, diverse forests and fertile pastures. From the viewpoint on the banks of the Ter, you can see a micro-landscape featuring historical and industrial elements. The Roure de la Coromina, an oak in the municipality, was declared a monumental tree by the Generalitat de Catalunya in 2025. It stands along the path connecting Sant Quirze de Besora with the Parc del Castell de Montesquiu.

Local Traditions and Getting Around

Local production history includes Destil·leries Bosch, founded in 1892 and known for its herbal liqueur and Ratafia Bosch. The Gymkana Digital about Ermessenda de Carcassona adds an interactive family activity to the historical themes: puzzles and clues lead you through the entire municipality.

Sant Quirze de Besora is on the Barcelona–Puigcerdà railway line, part of the Renfe network. If you are planning a train journey, check the timetable for your travel dates. When looking for a hotel, you could first consider what you want your stay to focus on: the bridge, settlement traces and chapels offer a cultural history focus, while the hiking trails, promenade and landscape offer other perspectives.
