Pineda de Mar brings together a range of travel interests: dels Pins Beach combines a coastal area surrounded by pine trees with a picnic area and water sports; the route through the Riera de Pineda valley passes through agricultural land and valuable woodland. The history of Santa Maria Church adds another dimension.
Beaches and water activities
dels Pins Beach is in the north of Pineda de Mar. Alongside the picnic area, it has a sailing club and a water sports centre offering activities such as windsurfing, banana boat rides and wakeboarding. Activity availability may vary by season. The Base NĂ utica de Pineda de Mar also offers catamaran trips, kayaking, Flyfish, banana boat rides and water skiing, and rents out nautical equipment. Offers and opening hours may change; check current options if you are planning a particular activity.
Riera Beach is considered peaceful and family-friendly. Green, shaded areas invite visitors to stroll; access is via underpasses with stairs and ramps. Fishermen’s Beach is also accessed via underpasses with stairs and ramps, as well as a railway crossing near the station. As access routes may change when beach infrastructure is modified, it is advisable to check them before your visit.
In summer, Pineda de Mar offers free activities for families, such as the Baby Centre and Mini Beach Club. Fishermen’s Beach also has a platform and a water park. Some facilities are seasonal, so bear this in mind when planning a beach day.
Hiking and trails around town
For a circular route with a clearly specified length, consider the trail to Font del Ferro: it is 6.5 kilometres long, starts and ends at the church in Pineda de Mar, and passes through Mediterranean woodland. The route is rated moderate. Check route conditions and safety advice before setting out.
The route through the Riera de Pineda valley focuses on a different landscape. It starts at Santa Maria Parish Church and passes through agricultural land and ecologically valuable woodland. If you would rather explore the town centre, you can follow the route to the centre of Pineda independently using the route map; it is not guided. The different route descriptions can help you choose how to explore, without assuming that every route has the same landscape or length.
Santa Maria and the town’s history
The first church of Santa Maria de Pineda was consecrated in 1079 by Bishop Berenguer Guifré of Girona. On 1 August 1545, the Turkish corsair Dragut attacked the church. Afterward, the church and other places in Pineda were fortified. These events give the church a connection to the town’s distant past.
A 16th-century masia currently houses the Fundació Tharrats d’Art Grà fic and Pineda’s cultural department. The foundation preserves graphic art by numerous contemporary artists, mostly Catalan, including Miró, Tà pies, Brossa and Tharrats. The town’s history and modern graphic art thus stand side by side as distinct cultural themes.
“El tresor de Pineda de Mar” also connects the town with a specific activity: the 90-minute treasure hunt leads to well-known and lesser-known places in Pineda. An incomplete map and a letter signed by the pirate Dragut lead to 13 riddles. The activity is open to everyone and is especially aimed at families.
Getting there and when to visit
Pineda de Mar has a train station on line C-1. Trains run every 30 minutes in both directions: to Maçanet/Blanes and to Barcelona/L’Hospitalet de Llobregat. Check the timetable before travelling. Another date to bear in mind is the traditional Sant Jaume gathering: it has been held every year since 1979, usually on the last Sunday in May. The exact date may vary; if you want to plan your stay around it, check the date for the relevant year.
