In Yepes, the medieval city walls and their gates provide a thread for a cultural trip. Two medieval defensive towers and four surviving historic gates from the former wall are among the town’s notable landmarks. They are joined by churches, chapels and a town house with very different architectural details. Visitors who would like to explore the history and monuments of the old town with a guide can book a guided tour through the Yepes tourist information office. Check the current booking arrangements in advance.

City Walls and Historic Gates

The Puerta de Madrid, also known as the Puerta de San Miguel, is part of the second ring of walls. Two semicircular towers flank the gate; a painting of Saint Michael the Archangel is on the side facing the town. The Puerta de Toledo, also called the Puerta del Carmen, is also part of the second ring of walls. Its two semicircular towers have loopholes and machicolations. At the top of a Baroque altarpiece, an image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel faces the inside of the town.

Comparing the two gates brings out their distinctive features: at San Miguel, the image of the Archangel defines the side facing the town, while Carmen has the towers’ defensive features as well as the Marian image on the altarpiece. Together with the medieval wall and the four surviving gates, they offer a view not just of individual landmarks, but also of the former fortifications as a whole.

Churches, Chapels and Art

The religious buildings also reward a closer look at their different layouts and architectural elements. The Convento de San José y San Ildefonso is a convent of Discalced Carmelite nuns. Its single-nave church has a barrel vault and a Baroque altarpiece. The Ermita de San Sebastián, by contrast, is a 17th-century Baroque church with three naves separated by five Doric stone columns.

The Iglesia Hospital de la Concepción belonged to a former hospital complex. Its single-nave church has a barrel vault, five transverse arches and a raised gallery. A 17th-century grille separates the main chapel from the nave. The Ermita de San José, in turn, stands out for the two storeys of its 17th-century Baroque chapel: the ground floor is built of ashlar, while the upper floor is masonry. These differences give culture enthusiasts several specific architectural features to explore, from vaulting to the way a building is structured.

A different example of civil architecture is the Casa Don Pedro Flores de la Oliva, next to the Plaza Mayor. This Herrerian town house is built around a square courtyard with a colonnade. In the Iglesia Colegiata de San Benito Abad, the main altar consists of fourteen paintings by Luis Tristán depicting episodes from the life of Christ. The Picota, also known as the Rollo Jurisdiccional, adds another point of interest: it is a Gothic symbol of jurisdiction, with a four-step base and carved columns decorated with half-pearl motifs.

Walking Tours, Hiking Route and Event Dates

In addition to guided tours of the old town, the “Las Fuentes del Valle” hiking route is another option to consider when planning a visit. It is included in the province of Toledo’s Paseos Naturales programme. Check the latest route details and programme before setting out.

The Yepes Town Council has organised the Jornadas Calderonianas since 2000, during the week around Corpus Christi. The programme includes a Corpus Christi procession and dramatised tours entitled “Un viaje por el Yepes del siglo XVII”; individual activities may vary from one edition to another. The Jornadas also feature a Baroque market in the Plaza Mayor, where local craftspeople and producers offer traditional cuisine and handmade goods. Participants and offerings may vary between editions. If you would like to plan your trip around the programme, check the specific event dates and activities in advance.
