Montesclaros combines a distinctive heritage of lime and stone with architectural history and local festival days. Its trails offer further perspectives on the town: the former extraction and processing of lime, as well as old watermills in scenic natural areas. This brings architecture and customs together with walks through a landscape rich in trees.

Hiking Between Lime Kilns and Mills

Montesclaros's location in the Sierra de San Vicente offers opportunities for hiking. The PR-TO 26 Ruta de los Caleros is a 7.96-kilometre circular route of low difficulty. As a circular route, it returns to the starting point; the distance describes the entire loop. The route passes through former sites of limestone extraction and processing, including lime kilns and dolomite quarries. East of the Sierra de San Vicente, it runs through a tree-rich landscape of dehesa and pine forest. Check the latest information on the route and difficulty before setting out.

The Ruta de los Molinos de Montesclaros leads to old watermills and through scenic natural areas. The trails have different focuses: the Caleros route centres on the former extraction and processing of lime, while the Molinos route takes in old watermills and the surrounding nature.

Buildings and the History of Lime

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios dates from 1552. Its tower was built of ashlar in the Gothic style towards the end of the 15th century. The Rollo de Justicia was erected in the 15th century in the Late Gothic style. At the Pozo romano, the name describes a well built in a typical Roman style from granite blocks; however, its origin and date are uncertain.

The local history of lime also extends beyond the trails. The white dolomitic marble quarries of Montesclaros were used mainly for the lime industry. Blocks from the quarries were used for the La Cibeles fountain in 1780 and the Neptuno fountain in Madrid in 1781. The settlement may have originated through the use of local lime kilns, known as caleras. In Montesclaros, a possible explanation for the town's origins, architectural evidence from different centuries and the history of lime quarrying come together.

Festivals and Local Traditions

The Ermita del Cristo de la Misericordia is closely associated with local devotion and popular celebrations. For the celebration of San Sebastián on 20 January, wine, chorizo and cheese are served to everyone interested in the evening at the Centro Social. The programme may vary from year to year.

Los Huevos is a traditional festival on Easter Sunday, when the Quintos hang empty eggshells on braided loaves of bread. On the evening of 4 February, the Quintos light a log in the square as part of the El Leño tradition; refreshments are also served there. Santa Águeda and El Leño are celebrated on 5 February. Nuestra Señora de los Remedios is celebrated on 15 August. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates and programme in advance.
