Discover Santa Olalla through its architectural history and traces of old travel routes: the Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol is the town’s oldest building, with origins dating back to the 11th century. The town is also home to Mudéjar architecture, historic landmarks and local procession traditions. If you’re looking for a hotel for a culture-focused stay, you can choose what to see in Santa Olalla based on these different interests.
Churches and Mudéjar art
The architecture and furnishings of the Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol reflect different periods. Its bell tower features Mudéjar design, while its interior preserves Gothic-Mudéjar wall paintings from the 13th or 14th century. The origins of the town’s oldest building and medieval art can thus be seen side by side.
The Iglesia de San Julián offers a different perspective on the town’s history. Alvar Pérez de Guzmán Suárez de Mendoza, Lord of Santa Olalla and first Count of Orgaz, founded it in the first quarter of the 16th century. A Mudéjar apse with horseshoe arches survives from its first phase of construction. The church also contains nine altarpieces of considerable artistic value. An altarpiece is a decorative structure behind or above an altar. The two churches thus have different points of interest: San Pedro is associated with the town’s earliest origins, while San Julián stands out for its history, apse and altar furnishings.
Collection and cultural venue
The permanent exhibition of the Centro de Interpretación Local is housed largely in the Casa de Cultura; the collection is also known as the Museo de Santa Olalla. It has three sections: archaeology, ethnography and visual arts. The Casa de Cultura is on the grounds of the former Hospital de San Antón and includes an auditorium, a library and an exhibition room. The site thus brings together the history of the former hospital grounds and today’s cultural facilities.
Historic travel routes and landmarks
The Piedras del Portazgo are two granite markers that once marked a spot on the Carretera Real where travelers, goods and livestock were subject to a toll. Since 2018, the stones have been at a location on Plaza de San Julián that visitors can access. Check access before your arrival if you plan to stop here.
The Ermita de San Sebastián also recalls travelers: it was built in the late 16th or early 17th century as a chapel for travelers and pilgrims entering Santa Olalla from Toledo along the Carretera Real. The Camino Real de Guadalupe passes through the town on its route between Madrid and Guadalupe. Distinct from this is the wooded ecological trail Camino de la ermita, established in 2016. It leads from the town to the meadow by the Ermita de San Blas. Historic travel connections and a route into the surrounding countryside thus offer different points of interest.
Processions and local traditions
On Corpus Christi, Santa Olalla features colorful carpets made of salt: since Corpus Christi 2016, the streets along the procession route have been decorated with geometric, Eucharistic and religious motifs. For the Corpus Christi procession, the route is also covered with thyme, mint, rosemary and other aromatic plants. If you want to plan your trip around this procession, check the dates for the relevant year.
Easter celebrations also have their own local tradition, including the dancing of the pasos, or processional statues. At the Feast of San AntĂłn, traditional sausages and pork products are served around a bonfire. Alongside the architecture, these customs offer a seasonal focus for planning your trip.
Plan your stay and arrival
When choosing your travel dates, consider whether you’re most interested in the churches and collection, historic routes or local festival traditions. The architectural and collection-related highlights can be explored independently of any particular festival date; for processions, the dates of the relevant events are what matter. Santa Olalla-Carmena railway station is currently closed and not in use. If you’re considering traveling by train, check its status again before planning your trip.
