Burguillos De Toledo combines sacred architecture and pilgrimage traditions with hiking trails along the Arroyo Guajaraz. The Iglesia Parroquial Santa MarĂa Magdalena is a 17th-century church in the Toledo Baroque style; the Ermita de San Blas is also a 17th-century building in this style. The RomerĂa de San Blas brings together a procession, a sung Mass, and a communal meal; along the Arroyo Guajaraz, paths wind through riverside vegetation. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding what to focus on: Would you like to experience a particular festival date, or are you mainly interested in architecture and landscape?

Architecture in the Toledo Baroque Style

The Iglesia Parroquial Santa MarĂa Magdalena has a single-nave floor plan in the shape of a Latin cross. Single-nave describes a building with one main nave; the Latin-cross floor plan describes the shape of the overall structure. This means the floor plan and architectural style can be considered as two distinct features: the church dates from the 17th century and is classified as Toledo Baroque.

The Ermita de San Blas is also a 17th-century building in the Toledo Baroque style, with a Latin-cross floor plan. Other features include a vaulted nave and a dome over the crossing. The crossing is the area where the arms of the cross intersect. The two buildings therefore share a period, style, and basic design; the vault and dome add to the architectural features of the Ermita.

The Ermita de San Blas has been undergoing rehabilitation since 2008. Check current accessibility before visiting.

RomerĂa de San Blas: Schedule and Date

The RomerĂa de San Blas proceeds in a procession from the parish church to its Ermita. It includes a sung Mass and a communal meal. Since 2010, the pilgrimage has once again been held at the Ermita, after being interrupted for more than 70 years. The traditional date is February 3; published programmes may differ. If you would like to plan your trip around the RomerĂa, check the specific date in advance.

The programme on February 3, 2024, included a tasting of homemade sweets and San Blas roscas. If you are travelling in another year, check whether this programme item is planned again.

Other Traditions and Pilgrimages

The origins of the Baile de la Bandera date back to the 16th century; the oldest known written record dates from 1721. These two dates serve different purposes: the first refers to the origin of the custom, while the second refers to a written record. The Carretillas Escapadas have been recognised as a festival of local religious and cultural interest since 2012.

Another pilgrimage is the Romería de Nuestra Señora de Burguillos. It began in 2016; on May 31, 2023, it reached its sixth edition. The programme includes a procession from the church to its Ermita, reciting the rosary along the way, and a Mass on arrival. At the 2023 celebration, migas and lemonade were served to participants.

Hiking Trails Along the Arroyo Guajaraz

Hiking trails along the Arroyo Guajaraz wind through riverside vegetation. They offer a different focus from church architecture and pilgrimages: here, the stream corridor and riverside vegetation take centre stage. If you would like to spend time outdoors as well as explore cultural attractions, you can plan the trails as a separate activity. Check trail conditions before setting out.
